Unless you've been on an extended cruise with 6000 of your closest friends, people really shouldn't be making negative comments about this situation. Regularly scheduled deployments are bad enough, but the confinement and what seems like smothering or stifling, is extremely hard for everyone, Officers and Enlisted alike. The Navy confirmed in a statement to CBS News that a sailor assigned to the air wing attached to USS Abraham Lincoln went overboard from the ship earlier this month and was recovered safely. The sailor was quickly picked up by an air wing search and helicopter, treated by the ship's medical department, and transferred off ship for follow-on care. The sailor's family was notified.

The circumstances are under investigation, the Navy said. CNN was first to report the sailor overboard.

In two recent meetings, family members clashed with Navy leadership over the difficult conditions — including food shortages — faced by the 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the Lincoln and demanded to know when loved ones would return home, MSNOW reported.

There's clearly a problem but you've got 5,000 sailors on the carrier. I would expect there to be a head case or two. I think we're seeing people jump to conclusions that what appears to be isolated incidents as becoming more of a norm. The other issues seem to be okay per the bolded text.

I watched a video earlier this year basically talking about this very thing. I didn’t know if there was anything to what it was saying but it said that the reason the Navy operates 11 carriers on the button is to prevent this type stuff with the crew. The video said that the Navy tried a few years back to retire a carrier early and make up for it with extended deployments among the fleet and found that nobody wanted to resign when it was time to get out. The were losing a lot of not just crew but pilots that are expensive to train. The divorce rates went up during that period among the fleet and the crew morale was low. Plus it put extra stress on all the ships and planes. So man and machine was breaking. So they learned that 11 carriers was the Goldilocks number of carriers.

We can’t operate more than 11 because we don’t have the infrastructure or the money to build them. With every carrier built it has to have escort ships to escort it and then all the planes and crew. We just simply can’t afford to build more.
