The Catholic Church is the most corrupt quasi government entity in the world.

That comment is a sin. Say 10 Hail Mary's, 5 Lord's Prayer, and Father Zach will grant you 10 years indulgence from Pergatory. Now, go and sin no more!

Should not be paying churches anything, not a cent! Separation of taxpayer money and religion!

Or….just be entertained by a band with words projected on a wall, wave your hands like an idiot with your eyes closed, and grab a latte in the lobby on your way to the gym and daycare before passing by the “Pastor’s” mansion where his wife and kids live.

They helped many high level war criminals escape Europe near the end of WWII. So did the Red Cross.

As a staunch Catholic along with Champagne, I'll jump in and take the heat here.

1. SOME form of immigration non-profit services can be handled by churches. And they SHOULD have access to government grants like any other 503c. All of the comments in here limiting that are totally wrong on this point. It's how are non-profit systems are built, and they did work when limited.

2. There's no such thing as a human lead organization that limits itself - it's just not a function of how things operate. As soon as expansion is allowed, all human endeavors expand into open space.

3. Churches, while they shouldn't be, are no stranger to that phenomenon.

4. It's not the churches fault the shackles were taken off - and THEN people with even bigger motivations to twist the system - did so. It's often not priests and monks who run these parts of Churches - it's lay people.(There are corrupt everything, in every organization).

5. Churches should, and kind of have to, help anyone and everyone. That's part of what they should do. They shouldn't politically influence that or put other people at risk, but that's such a hard stance to take at scale, it just never makes sense. Someone seeking help gets help, regardless of what is done around that, the core value of most Christian churches is always to help.

6. Yes, they helped themselves too much and this should all be shut down, and immigration grants should be HIGHLY controlled and limited. Really all grants.

7. Don't bring up Catholic Charities. We all hate that abomination of an organization. I do not give money to them.

Explain to me again why they are not considered to be a for-profit business and don't have to pay income tax like the other for-profit businesses in this country.

They're not "quasi". The Vatican is a sovereign country, and the Pope is the head of state.

Why should the US taxpayers be forced to "grant" them money?

Why can't a 503c entity raise funds from private donors, only, without assistance from US taxpayers?

Why the frick do religious groups get grant money? Really why do any non profits get government money?

Cut it all off. It's not the taxpayers duty to fund the Catholics, Protestants, Jews or anyone else.

I am amused when you all try to separate this from the actual church.

I'm really at a loss in deciding which major world religion - Catholics, Jews, Islam - hates a sovereign USA more.

I agree with you. I am against this kind of use of US taxpayer money. This is just another example of how little control we have over how our tax money is spent.

None of us approve of this but there seems to be no way to Vote our way down a different path.
