If your assertions about NATO’s thought processes were so steadfast then why have we been holding up Ukraine’s application for 20 years?

Another appropriate question is Why is Russia so upset about the prospect now? So upset that it is massing troops near the border.

I edited. They did apply for the MAP in '08. That does not mean they are anywhere close to joining.

None of the other post-Soviet additions have had any issues whatsoever. In fact, most of those countries are NATO's best members, biggest suppliers of NATO forces, and actually spend 2% on defense.

I was a recruiter, is your kid in the dep? Or is he early Army boot? Officer? Good on him for wanting to serve, I def feel your concern.

I agree it’s not worth it.

They would say they’ve tried to address their issues diplomatically but were rebuffed.

How true that is, I don’t know.

Russia is not the boogeyman that the nightly news would have you believe.

Fine. Doesn't mean we have to accept them and all the risks it entails.

What risks ? You think Russia is going to stop with Ukraine ? Russia and China are playing hte long term game and they are already winning. And you want togive them even MORE advantage ?

The guy interviewed here calls it a reverse Cuban Missile Crisis
Is the US currently controlling nations behind an iron curtain after having taken them over in the last several years? Are we at all similar to those soviet fricks?

We lost our shite when the Soviets started to park nukes in Cuba. Took the world to the brink of all out war.

Now, we have basically pushed the primary anti-Soviet/Russian multinational organization to every border Russia has on their western side, and Ukraine is getting ready to join.
IMO, Putin's actions have much more to do with ethnic Russians in Eastern Ukraine being mistreated by the Ukrainian government. That mistreatment is the source of an ongoing civil war there.

So as no one is looking to place Nukes in Ukraine (A la the Cuban Missile Crisis), the more salient question is how would the US react if Mexico began systematically attacking, robbing, and brutalizing any Americans living there? Probably just as we did 106 years ago, aka just as Russia is contemplating doing now.

I'm aware, and that was a mistake at the time not to build closer ties with Russia.

I don't think its an unpopular opinion and I believe there was quite a lot of consternation of running NATO right up against Russia's borders. It would only serve to create a flashpoint that NATO would be compelled to defend.

It’s not so simple to run around invading countries left and right. They’re going to have more of a slog in Ukraine than they think they will.

We are not and cannot be the world’s police force.

I'm sure that the Ex KGB communist agent who was part of purges and the supression of revolts and protests, and who murders all his political opponents, really cares about his people being mistreated LMFAO

Well, it probably doesn't help that the current President is basically a Ukraine crony.

Even if that’s true you’re talking about a short term problem

It's not a simple ? Can you explain how he is moving an invading force to Ukraine right now then ? Because it sure looks that simple.
And no, I don't think they will, because Russia has no problems getting rid of protestants like the west. Just ask Putin's political opponents, oh wait you can't, they are dead.

Don't come crying later when the Chinese and the Russian take over the world and sink the USA to the floor then. Good luck fighting a war alone. You are going to need it.
