quote:

Capital gains tax is the tax you may owe on the profit from selling an asset for more than you paid (your cost basis), and it’s triggered when you sell, not when you just hold the investment. In the U.S., gains held for more than 1 year are generally taxed as long-term (often at lower rates), while gains held for 1 year or less are generally taxed as short-term (at ordinary income rates).

This would be a HUGE improvement, but cap gains taxes should be an unconstitutional illegal taking. Just like property taxes.

Inheritance taxes are certainly theft.

I hope that's where this eventually ends up once the national debt is erased...and I believe it will be before too long.

Would be huge. So much of the “gains” we are taxed on are just inflation.

This would be wonderful and heartbreaking all at the same time.

At least we would get a lesson in fiat money and Keynesian economics.

You are correct, but many of the young cannot or will not think that far ahead. They want it all now. Can't say I was much different <30.

You're not wrong. We all feel like we're immortal at that age.

That would be a huge improvement. They should index gains and raise the rates so that it is revenue neutral. That would improve both ends of the capital gains inequity. Then tax carried interests at the capital gains rate and give a 50% exemption until the gains are eventually realized.
