Do you fish offshore in the Gulf? If so, no one should have to explain it to you. Shark populations, especially Bull Sharks have exploded. And with no pogies to eat, trout, snapper, tuna, and grouper on the end of angler’s lines have become a major part of their diet.

The only ones dangerous to swimmers are Tiger, Bull and Lemon. Lemon are aggressive but not deadly. Bull are the biggest threat. I’ve seen more hammers than any shark along the Gulf coast but they generally avoid people.

Sharks are protected. They seem to be overpopulated. They eat the mahi before you get it to the boat, and they mess with the sailfish.

They are seemingly everywhere the last few yrs, even when inshore fishing. Was on a trip last yr where they got so bad we had to move spots bc we were just pulling up fish heads.

Trump admin is doing a lot to help out American food producers. Farmers, ranchers, fishermen, aquaculture.

The belief is that food security is a national security priority and we should protect those that grow or catch it here from outside sources destroying the industries.

BBB had some provisions for us who grow farm raised fish. But it’s not all inclusive for all aquaculture, it doesn’t include baitfish production like minnows or shad. It only applies for food fish producers like catfish, salmon, etc.

America is head and shoulders above the world at producing sustainable food at the highest quality. Yes there are issues with food processing and health concerns but I’m talking about the farming and fishing practices. We do a great job at producing high yields with minimal environmental impact compared to rest of world.

No reason foreign pogie boats should fish our coastal waters ruining the ecosystem for our fisheries. It should be protected at all costs so fishermen not only keep their way of life but so generations after us can continue to enjoy good seafood. I’m sick of foreigners ruining our fishermen and aquaculture industries with shitty imports. We want gulf caught shrimp, Louisiana farmed crawfish, gulf oysters, Mississippi farm raised catfish, Atlantic farmed salmon, Atlantic caught cod, tuna, mahi, etc. Gulf caught snapper, redfish, triple tail, etc.

Get that low quality cheap Asian shite out of our country. It comes from polluted oceans, farms using polluted river water, fish fed raw sewage instead of feed from a mill.

And can we get this current administration to maybe look into doing something about the shark overpopulation in the Gulf? I'm sure there are some fisherman that know better than me, but I know people who often have to completely stop fishing offshore because they are basically just hooking big grouper and snapper and AJs just to give the sharks an easy meal.

I could get behind that. They ain't bad eating either.

Yeah I think a good argument could be made that commercial fishing pogies are screwing up the food chain.

Grok estimates the pogie industry in the U.S. is approximately $300 million annually across the U.S. coast.

Grok also estimates that recreational fishing accounts for $138 BILLION annually.

Politicians better get their shite together around this subject or they will get run over.

The cost of live bait has zero to do with pogey boats.

I’m against them, but good god, do some research before looking like an idiot.

Well ok then. I was just looking for an "in" to complain about the cost of live bait. It's near and dear to my heart.

Really don't care if I look like an idiot. Isn't the first time, damn sure won't be the last.

Pogie lobby has been one step ahead of the rec anglers for 5 or more years. The Pogie industry actually threw the Hard R out the last time they were challenged in Baton Rouge.
They have been kicked out of every state save two, their time is coming to an end though.

From my understanding, and I’m thinking back to an article I read a few years ago, their big money making market is manufacturers of pet and livestock feed.

Pissing off fisherman? I'd think this would make the American fisherman really happy.

Have you ever watched "A River Runs Through It"?

You are in Prime Location for Salmon, Trout, Sturgeon up to 1,000 lbs or more.

Saltwater off the coast.

You ought to try it, mate.
Pay for a trip/guide the first time and then be prepared to spend lots of money. LOL.

Hunting is the only thing I spend more money on than fishing.....including Mrs. Speckhunter, no pics.

Been seeing them in Lake Robin and Coquille the past 3 years, close to Hopedale and Shell Beach, places they’ve not normally fished. The redfish population in the Southern Biloxi marsh has more or less crashed during this time. Northern Biloxi marsh absent of pogie boats is fine for reds.

Every attempt the past few years to restrict them coming close to Grand Isle has been successfully fought or blocked by politicians funded by the pogie industry. A somewhat limited restriction was enacted a year or two ago, one they routinely violate.

Fish biology wise this is not complicated. Little fish, pogies, are eaten by bigger fish, who in turn are eaten by even bigger fish. The pogie industry is wiping out the feedstock for our specks, reds and other game fish.

We allow this to happen for the politically connected few, affecting the many. That it’s in service to a don’t give a shite foreign company is icing on the cake. If you’d ever witness their bycatch kill of Bull redfish anywhere, the breeders, it would make you angry. And sick for the waste.

As usual, welcome to Louisiana.

The pogy boat have bern known to wipe out huge schools of redfish. The videos they show of the redfish being caught in big nets whenever the ban comes up is actually the pogy boats from Moss Point. Before the pogy boat industry you could catch tarpon, kings, cobia, big rede etc all off the piers on the pretty much any beach on the Coast

The Pogie boats have absolutely devastated the Tarpon fishery in Louisiana.
