True or False - With a two party system there are less stalemates and less left radicals

As much as I dislike a two party system, I think it is better than the alternative. Nothing would get passed if we had four or five parties. We would also have more empowered left wingers in office.

And you are correct that in a parliamentarian proportional representative system, there would be actual far-left parties that make our Democratic party look mundane and centrist in comparison.
The problem is those rarely play in the bigger picture except maybe to be the final piece in a coalition and they get very few concessions for that

I think a parliamentary system would work well if they eliminated “first past the post”. The UK needs runoffs like Louisiana used to have under the Jungle Primary.

There is also too much executive instability in parliamentary systems. This would not work well for a superpower.

What's that got to do with it? France and the UK have nukes and supposedly militaries, and a parliamentary system has done nothing that Brussels hasn't wanted.

False, it encourages the extremes.

That issue is more from the single member district (SMD) format of the UK elections. That's why they're traditionally a 2 party system more than the Parliamentary aspect. It's a hybrid that gets the worst out of both systems, IMHO (no separation of powers and a 2-party system).

Same for the right. If we did that here we would definitely have a White Christian Nationalist Party (regardless of what it was actually called.)

Yeah, but they stretch the spectrum toward the extremes. The middle moves farther left and right.

No, because the extremes have their super-minority homes where they can congregate politically.

Does anybody really think lobbing the Presidency back and forth like pickleball startung in 1988 is effective?

This was true >40 years ago because the parties could work together on common sense issues.
The left moved far away from common sense.
Both sides lost their grip on financial responsibility. They’ll all spend money we don’t have to attract votes and stay in power.

Yes, because it legitimizes the viewpoints in people's minds.

If this were true those fringe parties would become more popular, which basically never happens.
Posted on 10/12/26 at 5:32 pm to Ramblin Wreck
You probably do have more of an opportunity for extremist fringes to take significant control of the government in a multi party system.
There are real world examples of this to this day

Wrong again. You're on a real losing streak today.
I didn't say it would convert more people to the fringe party. I said it would move the whole spectrum left and right. It would shift the middle factions.
Just like Bernie Sanders has almost singlehandedly done here in this country with the Democratic Party, despite failing twice to win a nomination for POTUS.
Matter of fact, he got significantly fewer votes his second time around, but that didn't stop the party from continuing to move left.
Without Bernie there would be no AOC, Omar, Tlaib, or probably Mamdani. Not as influential policy leaders, anyway.

We only have a two party system bc the two dominant parties colluded to ensure no third party ever becomes viable.
