Reminds me very much of the observation stated by a victim of a totalitarian govt: once the govt's level of domestic political control is at its zenith, the govt will issue propaganda that is obviously and demonstrably false. The Govt knows that it's false and it knows that the People know that it's false. The Govt issues the propaganda in order to DEMORALIZE the people. The idea is that the People know that the Govt knows that the Govt can tell obvious lies to the People and that the People have no realistic option other than to pretend that the lie is the truth.
THAT is demoralizing to a People - when you know that the Govt can lie to your face obvious lies and there is not one damn thing that you can do about it.
That's were the USA is as a country now.
