There are probably a dozen synonyms which would have conveyed essentially the same meaning. Was the author being "racist?" Almost certainly not. But I don't discount the possibility that she selected her terminology to generate a mini-controversy and draw some attention to herself.

I believe it says more about you trying to assign some nefarious intention to the quotes. I guess now in addition to all of your perceived super abilities you’re able to ascertain the innermost thoughts of random people and interject your biases onto them.

If you’re mad that you can’t use the word niggling, you’re probably a racist. Sorry, guy.

British people use it a lot. That's why the daily mail used it. That should have been obvious to the dumb asses at teen vogue.

When are we going to cancel Arnold Schwarzenegger? Are we just going to sit here and ignore how almost racist his last name is? I say we force him to change it to Schwartz or Schwartzman and we can make two groups happy. Even better, change it to Schwartzwoman and make three groups happy.

I actually don't think I have ever used that word.

From my experience it’s commonly used by Brits.

ETA: an African American co worker of mine went to HR once because a Brit used the term. Thankfully the Brit was not fired over it.

Etymology. First attested in 1599. Origin uncertain, but likely borrowed from Norwegian nigla (“to be stingy”), ultimately from Old Norse hnøggr (“stingy; miserly”), related to Old English hneaw (“stingy; niggardly”).

Was the AA co-worker fired for his weak vocabulary?

Years ago, someone criticized Bill Buckley for using words with which many readers might not be familiar. To paraphrase, he replied that it was far better for him to elevate the vocabulary of others than for others to insist that he communicate in remedial English for their benefit.

Needless to say, I agree with Buckley.

Agreed.

The author knew exactly what she was doing. It's much closer to sensational journalism than it is to racism.
