It's not being dense. It's a fact that people traveled to America for a new life and for their kids to be Americans. But since there was no welfare and these people worked their asses off that makes it not the same. There were always immigrants there were always immigrants we didn't want (Chinese, Irish, Italians) at times. But the difference now is the drain on our Healthcare and schooling and welfare.
If the last three weren't an issue we likely would look at the illegals like we look at the boats of immigrants.

It started in earnest with Wong Kim Ark and picked up steam with allowing Indians citizenship and then we finally allowed Chinamen citizenship in the 40s, I think.
