I’m guessing having citizens recording them with cell phones makes it more difficult for LEO’s to do the things they really would like to do

Some of them I guess, but the overwhelming majority of them are just doing their job by the books. They understand anything they do will be the misrepresented by anti-LE ilk and the MSM will use it to further their agenda of dividing the country through primarily race baiting.

ome agencies, particularly law enforcement, do encrypt their radio traffic.

Or use trunking which require a little more expensive scanner to decode.

However, some agencies, such as LPSO,use plain FM on UHF frequencies that a $30 Baufeng ham handi talkie can receive.

Sorry, I don't speak Spanish.

Maybe someday with the help of the ACLU warning illegals away from Florida.

Read this book... it goes into detail on how our law enforcement entities have gone from Peace Officers to Stormtroopers.

I'm surprised by so many in this thread that condone the Police State of America.

I'm suggesting that these almost never occur. Perhaps NEVER (where the hostage taker brings a scanner with and uses it to keep up with what the police are plotting as a response).

When all departments had the old 800 system, it was very common for most people to have scanners. A lot of people up to no good would have hand helds in their vehicle. Every radio shack carried them with frequencies of all the local public agencies.

If you don't understand how having access to this benefits criminals and hurts law enforcement's opportunities to work efficiently and safely then no point in saying any more

State, local and Feds have been doing this for YEARS and it makes perfect sense.Even encrypted transmissions are still recorded.

Scanning technology has also proliferated because of apps that can simply be downloaded on smartphones

Most all major metro LEO's have Smartzone sysytems with a form of "trunking" that still can encrypted.Trunking makes no difference.

All frequencies can be encrypted.Doesnt matter if its 800,UHF or VHF.Just depends on the system or radios used.

you are correct, but at this time those transmissions are in the clear.

Yes and if you disagree you're a bootlicking fascist that supports a complete police state takeover and essentially an enemy of the people

I hope - OP - you know that cops have cell phones and do alot of their sensitive discussion on them. I don’t know what you think you’re missing out on; as one poster pointed out you can get any radio traffic downloaded on a CD via open records acts.

Maybe where you live but almost all Fed LEO's use encrypted UHF/VHF

If a local agency is still using UHF or VHF they probably have a lower tier radio system that's capable of being scanned.

Why in the hell should a citizen have to jump through hoops with open records acts (that have indefinite time limits) in order to get information on what the armed branch of government is doing in his community? Have you ever filed a FOIA for police records?

It distrubs me that so many of you are so eager to defend a situation where law enforcement is less transparent.

The ‘safety’ argument is used time and again to keep citizens in the dark and infringe upon rights (see Milo at Berkley)

They have been encrypting some radios. The news is that an increasing number of departments are going to 100% encryption.

Almost ALL LEO P25 radios have come with option for years...it's merely a software upgrade.

Do you not understand that almost anyone with a smartphone can download NUMEROUS apps capable of scanning PD radios?

It's the main reason their doing it.
