History has shown this makes things worse for the invaders.

Putin is essentially saying that the west can't have Ukraine. Either Ukraine is neutral or it is under Russia's sphere. It cannot belong to the west.

that doesn’t work without military occupation… Russia does not have forces or the capital to occupy the largest country in Europe and it 40 million people.

Yall keep trashing putin to discredit those that aren't in the ukraine is a poor victim camp. We all know putin is not one f the good guys. Nobody disagrees on that. Focus on where there is disagreement. How good or bad is the ukraine govt?

Go start your own threads for that. This thread has been very informational from both sides. With minimal fighting except when the conspiracy crazies show up....

Think of it like a game thread. We're keeping it moving around here. Specific fighting and complaints go elsewhere

That’s correct about Russia and Ukraine

My original post stated there doesn’t appear to be a way for Putin to achieve his political goal… all you’re doing is stating his political goal.

The only way for Putin to isolate Ukraine from the west is through military occupation… there is no realistic scenario where that happens… and razing the country to the ground will only make that occupation worse.

Russia has already blown the dam that the Ukrainians built to stop the flow of water to Crimea.

Figured this had happened already but wasn't sure. I assumed it would be one of their main objectives once this started. If there was one area where Ukraine really fricked up poking the bear, it was damming that canal.

It's not reasonable especially since Russia offers no guarantee that it won't invade again.

None of it was ever really going to happen but if they want a great piece of propaganda pretending to rush to the table for peace and then Russia instantly having to backtrack is a great one. Any sort of secession of hostilities allows time to provision and reposition troops, even if it's under false pretenses and pretty much all the public talk, from every side in this conflict, is complete bullshite.

Imagine if Germany was forced to enter the war due to lack of oil/gas. Germany vs Russia rematch would be hella interesting.

I was just coming to ask why they haven't taken Odessa yet. Seems like the last big port city that they would want to have there.

There is an old Russian saying about there being nothing but crazy people in Odessa.

My uneducated guess last night was that the Russian ship movement was to draw attention as they pushed north to take the power plants and continue on to the south of Kyiv. I had the plants mixed up and stated nuclear but the reports said they were attempting to take a large Hydro.

1) From @BBC, a look at the Russian advance on Kiev. Chernihiv (both the city and province) are close to being encircled, there is a narrow gap for Ukrainian forces and civilians to escape, and that is through Kiev. The capital is close to being surrounded.

quote:

2) Looking further east, the Russians appear to be working to surround Sumy (both the city and province), as there appears to be a small advance moving from east to west. The northern part of Sumy province is already under Russian control.

quote:

3) The Ukrainian military has to make some very hard choices, & make them fast. Ukrainian military forces caught in the envelopment will be cut off from resupply of crucial weapons systems (particularly anti-tank missile), ammunition, etc. They will become combat ineffective...

quote:

4) ... in a conventional sense and forced to go underground and launch guerrilla/partisan operations. If Zelensky is serious about an all-out conventional fight to defend Kiev, he must withdrawal forces that are endangered of being encircled.
