I think it's the opposite. I think he overestimated how stupid MAGA was and thought they'd just follow him in lockstep when he said "nothing to see here, move along". Now that hasn't happened, he's attempting to do damage control...but somehow making the situation worse.
I still don't understand why he didn't just kick this can down the road with excuses until after midterms. It's not hard to say "there's 10's of thousands of videos and documents to pour through, so this investigation will take several months".

The Dems didn’t feel the need to talk about it before. They didn’t have all these podcasters saying they should release the files.
