Similar to what happened in WWII with the massive and extremely expensive battle ships. Once the navy realized they could easily be sunk by a plane that cost a tiny fraction of what the ship cost, they were barely utilized

From what I can tell, the USA has deployed enough military force in the Airport area to conduct secure air evacuation operations.
My guess is that China has some influence with the Taliban and China doesn't want the Taliban to interfere with air evac. Taliban doesn't want to fight the USAF right now - Why should they? They have won a decisive victory. The USA isn't going back to A-ghan.
Biden should be able to weather this storm. My guess is that this air evac will proceed to completion. After it is done, there will be plenty of time for the US Ministry of Propaganda known as mass media to rehabilitate Biden.
The USA's Propaganda Message will be, my guess: Tough Guy Joe stared down the Taliban and dared them to cause trouble - Taliban blinked and didn't DARE cross Tough Guy Joe. Joe made some gutsy calls and made the best of a bad situation that Trump and the A-ghan Govt created with the Doha Agreement.
IMHO, the political harm to the US Democratic Party from this debacle will be almost Zero. How could it not be? The entire propaganda/mass media industry will be devoted to rehabilitating Biden and the Dems. You think Americans will smarten up and realize the truth about it? I do not.

The difference being the current capital ships have no reason to be in range of antiship missiles.
Hard to cross the straits when you have F-18 Super Hornets blowing your arse up.
But....that requires a President with balls.

How? They’re all over the city that is enveloped in chaos. Some Afghanis do not give a flying frick about what the Taliban want and will just kill and rape as they please and take it out on Americans they find. I’m praying I’m wrong, but I don’t see the rational option at this point for all our citizens to make it back alive.

Why would capital ships need to get that close? Do you know the range of a Tomahawk missile? Do you realize at any given time there are submarines conducting ISR all over the globe?
