Paxton won by just 3% in the last Trump mid-term election, with much less scandal attached to his name. You can also argue the environment for Republicans in Texas is worse than it was in 2018. Do I think he will win? Yes. Will I be surprised if it’s close or he loses? No. The cities and suburbs are bluer than they were in 2018 and Biden had not let hordes of illegals in at that point.

I agree that Paxton will win and that it will be closer than, say, Cruz's last win or Trump's wins. I think a lot of people are upset with Trump's economic performance - especially the blue collar Hispanics of Texas, but it hard to see them voting overwhelmingly for Talarico - which is what he will need to win.
I will say, though, that there is no way this tougher environment for a republican in Texas than in 2018. That was the worst environment for a Republican since 2008 - maybe since watergate.

This started because one of the candidates Talarico was criticized for renting a pickup truck for a commercial to appear more of man, a real Texan. The bail of hay in the Chevy truck and the man’s hands all cupped on his leg looks effeminate even after they try to make him look like something he appears not to be. It’s the fact that he is trying to fool people into believing he is something he is not for the purpose of obtaining votes.

There's one common factor with 2018-- Trump's wildly unpopular Tax Cuts For The Rich. Compound that with Trump's even more disliked War plus a morally bankrupt Senate candidate who can't win a tug-of-war with a two year old, and what you get... is what you see.
