Prior to 2012 I used to listen to Jones occasionally, especially back when he was on the great Art Bell show. It was mostly just entertaining eye rolling late night talk. Fast forward a few years and Jones brand of lunacy began to go mainstream and I consider that to be just as much a threat to civilized society as the craziness on the left.

I agree, and I had forgotten about the Jones/Bell connection. I don't think Bell ever got sued for this, but he hyped the Hale-Bopp alien CT's (including posting doctored photos suggesting alien craft in the comet's tail) that Marshall Applegate used to pill the Heaven's Gate cult members into taking their lives to go rendezvous with the mother ship.

Art had on a guest that made the same outrageous claims about Hale-Bopp that that helped give some credibility to Applewhite's already crazy claims that he and his followers would be" beamed" up eventually by aliens. Art did not initiate the claims himself and he uncharacteristically confronted that guest about their claims live on air at one point.

It’s much more than “hurting someone’s feelings. Get serious…

Ohh, interesting. I think that's instructive for thinking about how Alex Jones might have done things differently in order to avoid such massive liability. More artful disinfoformers hedge their claims and even do some pushback even as they're "JAQ'ing" off, and he clearly did not.

Not really... it is egregious, but boils down to defamation and emotional distress.

Art's show was also lot more tongue in cheek and dealt mostly with the paranormal ...not the purported alternative "news" source that Infowars became later.

It already has.
I personally have 2 layer trusts, and all ventures thru llc.

Question all you want, or believe the truth.

I have no personal exposure to lawsuits (past a minimal point) and DEFINITELY no judgements can touch assets that aren't mine. Sorry

Yeah, I think of it as the radio equivalent of the Weekly World News - type grocery-store tabloids that no one took too seriously along with other aspects of 90's/aughts conspiracy culture, but after a while the market started to supply us with a more weaponized and disinformational version as people got hornier for malevolent CT's.

He will have to go to work for an entity that does not pay him too much money but provides everything a man could ever want or need.

What I think I know is.. there were two cases, the juries in both cases awarded a certain amount- steep. Then, both judges added on to those amounts excessively

In Texas, the jury awarded 4.1 MM in compensatory damages and 45.2 MM in punitive damages Texas Tribune

In CT, the jury awarded 976 MMin damages. The CT judge added 473 MM in punitive damages. AP

but around 1 billion was from the jury.

i remember driving home from a late night Quake session on the T1 connection at work and Bell was going on about an alien ship coming with the comet. There was a whole cult of people waiting for them to arrive. It was crazy hearing that shite in the radio

This^^^^ has been a head scratcher for a long time.

I think what we have learned is the law is not equally applied across the US. If the Jones case would have been tried in Platte County Missouri it may have been thrown out or the defamation settlement would have amounted to a few hundred thousand dollars. .....but somehow in a Connecticut court he is found guilty of defamation and ordered to pay over $1 billion dollars.
