Firing an AR inside, especially in a hallway is brutal. It will fry your ear, not just hearing loss later in life. I was in a shooting bay and forgot to pull my ear pro down. One shot gave me permanent tinnitus in my left ear. It's not fun.

There are a few things to consider if you are considering a silencer or not.
Obviously a silencer is quieter. Depending on the caliber you are shooting a super sonic will still be loud due to the crack of the bullet.
Another, in the dark the flash from the gun will temporarily ruin your night vision and make it more difficult to spot other threats. You won't have muzzle flash with a silencer.
With a silencer, the bad guys still won't know where the shooter is exactly giving you extra time for follow ups or finding other threats.
Every single gun that I have for home defense has them. They are also already loaded and one in the chamber.
Last thing you want is to make a noise and have the bad guys running and spray and pray.

Check the stats on super vs subsonic. Below 1125 fps, quick search showed speeds between 1145 and 1400 on Remingtons site. A lot of 45 acp is already sub sonic. Even shooting super thru a suppressor knocks the sound way down, plus the flash.
Shotguns, including bird shot will absolutely penetrate multiple walls. Not saying rifles won’t but they start to tumble pretty quick after the first piece of Sheetrock. Hell the wad in a shotgun is going to blow through the Sheetrock first.

Yes.
The reduction in noise and the reduction in muzzle flash are well worth it.

This is probably the best post in this thread. For home defense all you need a small handgun or shotgun. Can’t believe some are even discussing an AR platform with a suppressor

A hollow point(or frangible) subsonic bullet through a suppressed host is the most polite way to smite a bad guy inside your home.
I only intend on injuring the intruder(s).

You cannot believe that people want what LEOs and military use in room to room combat?

Pistols only exist for you to fight until you can reach a longarm. Poor sight radius and adrenaline means not good results for projectile onto target.
Shotguns are ok, but lack the capacity of an AR and are best used in squad work. A single person defending the home is best suited to do so with the weapon professionals choose to use.

I don't align with his methods of communication but your dismisal of the AR platform for home defense is weak and unfounded.

The avg person isn’t going and doesn’t need to have an AR platform w a suppressor. We have people who bitch about gas prices and he’s trying to equate everyone the same as special weapons law enforcement. Hell the avg person doesn’t know how to clear a room, come on man.

Ok. The thread was asking about suppressed vs unsuppred generally, not what can people afford. Anything is better than nothing between these new goal posts, obviously.

I don't want the extra length on the gun indoors. The noise helps startle any others that you aren't currently ventilating and they will likely haul arse.

Bingo! The avg homeowner especially doesn’t need it and can’t handle the length compared to shooting a shotgun from the hip or a controlled handgun. Can’t believe there are nerds here in a thread about suppressors talking about clearing their home with an AR platform, suppressed.

yup. no more form 4 for many states. no more 200 dollar tax stamp. no more waiting 6 to 8 months to get weapon or equipment. no more registration with ATF.
just a NICS check/form 4473 and roll on out with your suppressor. bought mine 10 years ago. still have papers and tax stamp in my safe.
NFA states are still screwed on all but the tax as that is gone.
