Neighborhoods in New Orleans with high rates of police surveillance or “stop-and-frisk” encounters face health risks, including significantly higher rates of smoking, poor physical health, low physical activity, violent crime and domestic violence, according to a new Tulane University study published in Health Affairs.

The research, conducted by faculty from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the Tulane School of Social Work, found the association with frequent policing and health inequities after controlling for other characteristics.

“The key take-away,” said lead author Dr. Katherine Theall, “is that we need to pay more attention to racism-related stressors like heightened policing in certain communities that may have implications for health and well-being. While only a correlational study, it is one of the few linking such police encounters at the community level to health outcomes.” Theall is the Cecile Usdin Professor in Women’s Health in the Departments of Epidemiology (EPID) and Social, Behavioral, and Population Sciences (SBPS) and the senior director of the Tulane Violence Prevention Institute (VPI).

Would've never guessed that poor people smoke, are in poor health and are prone to violent crimes happening in their neighborhood!

Now do rural black communities that are hardly policed. Do they have lower rates of smoking and health problems?

They didn't found the police is Responsible, they found it's correlated.

And no fricking shite is correlated that the police patrols high crime neighborhoods more, and that people in high crime neighborhoods are more prone to poor life decisions.

But they don't make poor life decision because of the cops, the cops are there because those morons make poor life decisions in the first place.

If we've learned anything in the last two years, it should be that experts really don't know shite and are just pushing social agendas.

Are academics now recruited for a total lack of common sense?

Sure as hell couldn't have anything to do with dysfunctional family life, gangstas, drug culture and disdain for education as well as an entitlement attitude.

Must be the police causing those issues too.

Tulane could have saved that 100K for that study and just asked someone with a brain for free.

I can't wait to get out of an urban center and forget that they exist for the most part. I don't want to be in one when this off the rails train completely wipes out.

Let’s take the police out of these communities and see what happens.

Sadly the tax payers flipped the bill for this useless study.

I wonder what other statistic is associated with those neighborhoods...

Can't be violent crime. Therefore, the only correlation to poor personal choices is "cuz dem cops".
