WASHINGTON (AP) — In an effort to limit fraudulent claims, the Social Security Administration will impose tighter identity-proofing measures — which will require millions of recipients and applicants to visit agency field offices rather than interact with the agency over the phone.

Beginning March 31st, people will no longer be able to verify their identity to the SSA over the phone and those who cannot properly verify their identity over the agency’s “my Social Security” online service, will be required to visit an agency field office in person to complete the verification process, agency leadership told reporters Tuesday.

The change will apply to new Social Security applicants and existing recipients who want to change their direct deposit information.

Inb4 SloF*ckingPussy assures us all that requiring people to prove who they are to get Social Security is clearly racist and automatically unconstitutional. He’ll cite us a late 1800’s-era Supreme Court case which has nothing to do with the issue but assure us all that we’re just not smart enough (like him) to see the “real” nuanced meaning of the case.

Damn you mad

As for the OP, at least the elderly are notoriously capable of traveling to and from places. Seems like a great plan

And fraudsters notoriously would bail on in person verification.

I see no problem with requiring in-person ID checks.

Consider it one’s patriotic law-abiding duty.

You aren’t anti-American, are you ?

Two things:
How many real people change their deposit information? Fraudsters do

I have been in a SS office once and it went on lockdown due to a crazed person in the office.

Social security is less than ten years away from going insolvent, after which the program is legally mandated to cut benefits across the board.

Cutting down on fraudulent ss payments is a common sense solution to at least partially restore solvency to the system.

Yet here you are bitching about it.

Is it your belief that the elderly have an easy time with mobility and transportation?

A simple yes or no will do, spare the diatribe.

This sounds like a magnificent plan.

Unfortunately, now good people who administer valid SSA benefits for dementia patients will have to haul them before pissed off DEI hires within the SSA. To prove that the demetia patient, who paid into SSA benefits before the Vietnam War, is alive.

Not many people care for dementia patients anymore. Endeavor to persevere.

So mobility and transportation issues? That’s what I said

And you’re seeing the ones that actually get help.

I ams sure they haven’t cut staffing to that agency in a way that would make this like going to a DMV from hell.

Simple solution... employ the many jobless former federal employees to do home visits for the disabled and infirm. The freaking Census lady visited me last week because I hadn't gotten around to doing the survey.

If the Census people can send their workforce door to door simply to count heads, toilets and what kind of heater you have, a 15-20min process... why can't SSA also have a home visit mobile workforce?

Or, plan on closing a few dozen offices.

Approx. 40% of Social Security direct deposit fraud is associated with fraudsters calling SSA on the phone and changing the direct deposit bank account from the correct one to a fraudulent one.

Starting on March 29, in order to change the direct deposit bank account, one can:
-Change it online using 2FA (Call Center Technicians available to assist beneficiaries with website)
-Change it in person at a SSA Service Center

This is identical to the fraud protections at almost all major banks, where deposit changes are made either online or in person.
