Which begs the question: how long until Ukraine is admitted to NATO? It requires unanimous approval by the member nations. I wish Trump would revisit it; he seems to have forgotten all about it.

NATO is a relic of the past that Europe needs because it can’t defend itself. Britain, France, Germany, and Italy couldn’t cobble together enough of a force to stop a Russian incursion and they know it

George Washington warned us against entangling alliances and WW I and WW II proved the folly of them. It seems the world (including us) still don't grasp that lesson.

And that is different from NATO’s past?

WW1 and WW2 were huge successes for America. We came out stronger and more prosperous from each. You could certainly make the case that alliances turned a small conflict into WW1, but that was not a lesson America suffered.

At what cost? How many lives did the Russian Revolution, the rise of Communism, the Cold War, the Middle East Mandate system, and World War Ii (all directly due to World War I) cost? We are still paying the price. And WW I was directly caused by entangling alliances.

Man, the history of Europe, leading up to WW1, was one of near constant warfare. It was never going to stop until technology made war unbearable, and that lesson had to be learned in an actual war. Hence a WW1 was unavoidable. The only thing that made it a “World War” was technology. Napoleon's wars were just as far flung and involved as many “nations”.

Also, the Russian Revolution was going to happen one way or the other. The aristocracy simply had to be overthrown.

Maybe but Russia's poor performance in the war, along with the subsequent economic collapse and food shortage, was the spark.

Ukraine has proven to be a worthy adversary for Russia. Putin is looking more and more like a fool. It is costing him economically, militarily and politically…

No it isn’t BUT it made sense when the Soviet Union existed and after the destruction Europe suffered but it’s been 35 years since the Soviets collapsed and nearly 90 years since Germany invaded Poland. It’s past time for the US to move on and let Europe run NATO

His farewell address basically warned us of everything wrong that we do today and did throughout our history

It’s actually amazing the foresight he had on so many issues. And more amazing that we didn’t listen

Agreed. Imagine if we'd heeded his warning about political parties. How different would America be if people voted on someone solely based on their ideas and beliefs instead of the D or R by their name?
