Big gov wants to know who interacts with who, and this is the most convenient excuse they’ve had.

It’s something we don’t need to waste resources on, so naturally the Dems and Media will have the opposite narrative.

It only makes sense if the amount of people infected with Covid 19 is large enough for this to be an ongoing problem for our health system. (It won’t be.)

Authoritarians want to keep exercising power. It does have a place. For something like std's, there a small number of people you would have to track through, so it is helpful there. For something like covid, the incubation period is so long and the number of people someone encounters through that period make it completely impractical to try to sift through. It would probably be more effective to just randomly select people to test (voluntarily of course).

Waste of money and half the people will just tell them to frick off but if this eases the fear and neuroticism then I don’t give a frick hire then and let’s got to stage 10 and reopen this thing fully

LA is doing it because JBE loves every public program he can get his hands on, plus he's trying to reach the spending minimum needed to get the max federal reimbursement

The number of infected is why I think it’s a waste of time. Too many people carry the virus and they’ll come into contact with too many people over the incubation period.

It would make sense if this was a less virulent disease, and if it was deadlier.

Because what’s the point? You’re trying to stop the disease from spreading? That only makes sense if you can contain it. And Covid isn’t one you can contain.

Close contact in five days? How many people are you within 6 feet for >15 minutes consecutively? It’s usually going to end up being family, close friends and co-workers. Unless you’re riding public transportation.

Cities are where I think it would break down. You’re in contact with too many people.

Your tax dollars are spent to run 100s of govt programs which accomplish nothing of benefit. This is just another one to throw on the pile.

Shouldn't is the best answer. It only works as well as the accuracy and willingness of the information that the infected are willing and able to volunteer. Unless of course we do like the countries where it was actually effective and go right around voluntariness and willingness and accuracy of info from infected, and whether they like it or not tap into the private/personal lives of infected by seizing phone location data and credit/debit card purchase history info.

This is a huge privacy issue. Contact tracing is a great tool when there are just a few (less than 100) infected. It may be worth a try even if there are more infected, but over 100 infected and it's a lost cause. If they implement this, I suggest everyone dump their phone because it will become the way they track your location and who you interact with - and tracking people is the only possible goal of a program like this.

Great question. IMO, the way you framed it offers a partial explanation: the Nanny Staters view us all as perpetual preschoolers who are incapable of enjoying any degree of liberty or autonomy without rigid oversight and management by an all-wise and all-knowing Paternalistic State.

We have all heard of the term “Helicopter Patenting.” We are entering a new period of the “Helicopter State.”

fricking bingo.

Anyone who thinks the government or the app company they'd contract would limit their data mining to just health concerns is the worst type of naive frick in existence today.

Also, it's telling that the people most in favor of this nonsense are the ones who'll turn around and claim Trump is a fascist dictator seeking total control.

The best way to really get at the guy (it's just one single guy, ya know) who monitors everyone's movements is by going to his house after he leaves for work every day and get it on with his wife.
