WTF? My wife was telling me earlier that her wheelchair costs $100,000, and I was in disbelief. She said she thought her father was wrong until she saw the invoice.

How the frick are we paying $100k for a fricking electric wheelchair? This is outrageous. I’ll see if I can verify it further and get more details like the brand and manufacturer.

The medical field has to be where the majority of taxpayer fraud and theft is occurring. I told y'all awhile back I went into an urgent care facility a few weeks ago on a weekend and they charged Medicare $500 for a 10 minute consultation with a doctor. I sat in the waiting room 30 minutes, went in and met with the doctor for 10 minutes and that was $500.

The bill might say 100K, but Medicare did not pay $100K for a wheelchair. I guarantee that.

Because it’s a $35,000 electric wheelchair until it gets in the Medicare system.

My Pops got a high end one through the ALS group/foundation in our area. It was a "Cadillac". It had to be returned after he passed. I have no doubt it cost tens of thousands of dollars.

No, they didn't. They have a rate they'll pay max on items (the VA also does this), the provider will bill them an outrageous amount so medicare will pay the maximum they will pay for that item. I get bills from the VA (non-payable) that shows what outside providers charge them and what the VA actually paid.
For instance, the last time I had my teeth cleaned my dentist charged the VA $498, the VA paid $132, which is the maximum the VA will pay for a cleaning in my area.

I would imagine the DME could invoice any amount they want but Medicare has a set rate and will only pay that amount. Wait on the EOB before you raise unmitigated hell.

It’s shite like that why fricking Medicare and Medicaid costs are so fricking high. fricking fraud.

The problem is it is not fraud. They are selling at a price that the government is willing to pay. The government is generally frivolous with your money.

wife had polio 77 years ago, does not use a wheel chair, to difficult to transfer to, and wheelchairs are bulky to go to restaurants and stores. She uses a 1400 dollar 3 wheel scooter that is very easy to transfer, easy to lift into back of minivan. Getting Medicare to pay for is to complicated, I just buy them directly spinlife . com.

Consider also the repair expense on the Cadillac wheelchair. 125 $/hr rates and they will hold it in shop for a week. Scooter switches/batteries easily last 3 years, and replace the whole scooter when failure starts.

I’m pretty sure there’s a “built in” downward price negotiation component of medicare billing, or medical billing period when it comes to providers billing insurers/medicare. So although there’s still gouging involved, don’t expect “sticker prices” to be paid as is.
