When we talk about police over reach everyone talks about WACO, Ruby Ridge, and those things do happen. However, Fed agencies have access to equipment that's so far beyond what the average gun owner could defend, there's no point in discussing it YET.
The first conversation we need to have is these local yokals with your standard police POST training having access to, and the right to use with qualified immunity, weapons of war bought via military surplus. Most of these guys don't have the training or temperament for those rights.

This is really the only point that needs to be made. Private ownership of a War Ship was legal and common when the constitution was written, and the founding fathers did not see it necessary to restrict that. On the contrary, they saw the need to clarify that the government could not restrict it.

Retired LEO here : The answer to the OP’s question is a resounding YES; defense against a rogue government is the intent of the 2nd A, not bagging a nice 10 pointer or shooting birds.

And there's plenty of evidence contemporary to the founders to support the position that it covers arms of all sorts (whether used for militia purposes, self-defense, hunting, or otherwise).

The problem is not the GUN. The problems are the mentally sick no longer actively receiving treatment and troubled youth with CULCHA & Biden era illegals running wild.

In a way we already sort of do. Most of us pay taxes which are used to procure weapons such as M-16 s , aircraft carriers , A-10s and so on.

If law enforcement needs a weapon to enforce laws and safety, it's logical that civilians would also have access to those weapons.

The FBI will have special opps teams with full auto but a field agent will not carry such a weapon.

Interesting. Spent last week in DC for the 250 celebrations. Did the FBI tour and we were taken to the indoor shooting range inside the building to watch some agents take their qualification test. The guy heading up the gun range stood there and took tons of questions from the tour group and there seemed to be some gun nuts in the group asking lots of questions about the guns themselves.
I feel like I heard the guy answer that no one in the FBI uses fully automatic weapons.
Anyways, this tour was better than I expected and I'd highly suggest it to anyone visiting DC. But you can only request it through one of your representatives.

I dont know what they (fbi specifically) have now, but as of the early to mid 2000's I can tell you with 100% certainty that the regional tac unit guys had colt commando's, MP5sd's and m249's, same as hrt. Secret service cat team has a pretty stout selection of special stuff too...In the late 90's there were plenty of HK33 and 91's w/ MP5's..not sure about nowadays tho, maybe it's different but back then even the regional guys would come down and shoot/train @ camp villere (Slidell) and at stennis.. that being said, I too agree, people should be able to buy what they want, I mean if the average dude has money to burn on full auto (paperwork +gun, then you have to feed it..lol) then why not..
