Secretary of Iran Security Council: Hormuz Will Stay Closed Until U.S. Meets Its Condition

Iran said Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed unless the United States ends the war and meets Tehran’s conditions, raising the bar for a deal that would restore more oil traffic through the key waterway.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Washington must end the conflict and unfreeze Iranian funds held overseas before Tehran will agree to reopen the strait.

Iran has also delivered additional conditions to the United States through mediators, Rezaei said in comments carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency. He did not publicly identify those demands.

The comments complicate expectations that a shipping agreement could be reached quickly. U.S. officials had suggested last week that negotiations involving Iran and Oman were making progress toward allowing more vessels through Hormuz.

quote:

The market has spent weeks reacting to every suggestion that Persian Gulf shipping could normalize, even as actual tanker traffic has remained constrained and commercial vessels have continued to face security risks.

quote:

The latest demands make clear that Iran is tying the shipping issue directly to the broader war rather than treating Hormuz as a separate maritime problem.

Rezaei’s comments leave the next move with Washington. Ending the war and releasing frozen Iranian funds are substantially bigger concessions than simply agreeing on shipping rules, and Tehran says Hormuz stays closed until those demands are addressed.

Of course all this could change 17 times before next Tuesday.

Why can’t Trump open the strait??

He literally ended the war in Ukraine 24 hours after taking office didn’t he?

This whole thing is for show. We have the best Navy in the world and if we wanted to we could move tankers through there at will. Iran's Navy has been pretty much destroyed and any other threat in the area could be neutralized quickly. This is all a rich mans ploy to make them richer.

Iran hasnt physically closed the strait. All they have done is threaten to put mines in the water and that’s caused insurance companies to not insure tankers going through the strait.

The insurance companies are the issue.

The longer this goes on though the more time the world has to figure out alternative routes that will avoid this in the future. People keep chirping “two more weeks!” like they did during Covid predicting a market/energy disaster. But here we are still kicking. Just paying a little more in gas

I’m so sick of this. Either bomb the entire infrastructure or just abandon all or supposed allies. Gotta call out or own team on this and admit they’ve misplayed this by keeping the gloves on or not asserting the right amount of pressure on our “friends “ across the pond.

Don't think we will see much happen with Iran for a while. Could be wrong but seems like both sides are content with waiting each other out to see who caves first.

Iran believes OMB will be impeached, so they play the long game. I guess they think JDV would be easier to deal with.
