Reuters

quote:

Joe Biden eulogized Robert Byrd, asserting he was the grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). This claim is partly false. Byrd was not a grand wizard of the Klan. He was, however, a former organizer and member of the KKK. A Washington Post article reviewing Byrd’s memoir explains these years in more detail (? here  ).   In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 people in West Virginia to form a chapter of the KKK. Joel L. Baskin, the grand dragon of the mid-Atlantic region, arrived to organize the chapter. Baskin was impressed with Byrd’s skills and encouraged him to get involved in politics. Byrd was unanimously named “exalted cyclops”, which meant that Byrd was the top officer in the local klan. The responsibilities for this role included leading meetings and initiating incoming members ( here , here  ).

Can you imagine a role reversal and Trump was the one to eulogize a former KKK member?
I’m sure Reuters would have used the same rationalization to excuse his acquaintances.

What a very odd thing to fact check. What normal person cares if he was a "grand wizard" or an "exalted cyclops?" He was a disgusting racist that Biden still reveres.

The media cares when it’s trying to carry the water for one of its own.

That's some hard-hitting fact checking right there.

Next up: Joe Biden asserted that his favorite Super Bowl memory was the Steelers 27-24 victory over the Cardinals in 2008. This is partly false. The Steelers did defeat the Cardinals in the 2008 Super Bowl, but they won 27-23; not 27-24.

SNOPES FAST CHECK - FALSE

Byrd was NOT a GRAND IMPERIAL WIZARD in the KKK.

Byrd was just an EXALTED CYCLOPS in the KKK.

I'm not sure this is a distinction they want to celebrate.

If Trump unknowingly had a brief conversation with a KKK low ranking member 25 years ago it would be wall to wall coverage for a week by the deplorable and despicable media.

This should be enough to warrant no one caring about what title he held, because he definitively was a true believer in what the KKK stood for.
quote:

Byrd recruited 150 people

But, this should be a pretty damning classification that would warrant a normal person wanting to distance themselves as much as possible.

Byrd was unanimously named “exalted cyclops”, which meant that Byrd was the top officer in the local klan

Grand Wizard or Exalted Cyclops is like claiming homicidal maniacs and bank robbers are lifestyle choices. It really doesn't matter. It is what it is . He was a Klansman.

So a Trump quote often gets taken out of context, chopped up and overanalyzed but oh no no Byrd was not grand wizard. Did Biden ever denounce him for being IN the Klan? That's what I'd like to know.

This is like saying Reinhard Heydrich wasn't such a bad guy because he was an Obergruppenführer and not a Reichsführer.

Doesn't matter...has the media cut Trump slack for the false claim of the praise for "white supremacists" at Charlottesville? Were their allegations given any less vitriol based off the status of those "white supremacists" supposed rank in the KKK? I don't recollect that ever being a caveat for the media's venom...

That's like saying praise of Goebbels was not so bad because he wasn't Hitler...

Wasn't Byrd a mentor for Biden and several other Democrats?

I could see the writer caring if he himself is a grand wizard and being upset about the stolen racist valor.

Or the reverse. I am really not sure which one is the higher rank.

Okay, so Robert Bryd, Joe Biden's friend and mentor(?), wasn't the head of the area KKK; he was only the head of a local KKK chapter (that HE organized).

Well, that makes it totally cool.
