Byrd was NOT a GRAND IMPERIAL WIZARD in the KKK.

Byrd was just an EXALTED CYCLOPS in the KKK.

It does but apparently the Cyclops is just the leader of the local den... You know, the one that was in charge of selecting the size of rope, color of the bricks, etc... Oh and he more than likely was the one that determined who got bricked and who got strung up but that really is not that big of a deal...

If we are just discussing silly-arsed titles in a despicable organization, Grand Wizard sounds cooler than Exalted Cyclops.

After the (Democrat, arguably the first Progressive) President screened Birth of a Nation in the White House and recommended it to everyone he came into contact with, Klan membership blossomed all over the nation. Many, many ordinary Americans born within a particular window of time joined local chapters (this would include, for example, Harry S. Truman).

On the other hand, only the dedicated racists and/or crass opportunists rose to positions of high responsibility and rank in those organizations. Decent people either became inactive, left the organization or actively fought them (the latter of which Truman did in Missouri).

So wait...

Joe's eulogy to Byrd - when Joe THOUGHT he was a Grand Wizard of the KKK - is okay because Byrd wasn't ACTUALLY a Grand Wizard of the KKK?

This is like someone giving a glowing eulogy for a convicted pedophile and a reporter subsequently points out that the victim would be of legal age in Afghanistan.

The article left out a photo so that readers couldn't make their own judgement. It's almost like those photos have been scrubbed from the internet.

Weird.

I'd love for this "reporter" to run this defense by a black person, preferably one old enough to remember the bad old days.

Pretty sure Byrd himself denounced his own KKK membership and was ultimately praised by the NAACP for his owning up to his past.

Joe Biden Giving Eulogy of KKK Recruiter Robert Byrd Resurfaced After Trump Doesn't Condemn White Supremacists - Newsweek article
quote:

Experts have labeled Byrd's desire to "be influential in the Senate" as a primary motivator for his apparent change in ideology. James Tolbert, president of the West Virginia Chapter of the NAACP in 2005, told the Post that Byrd overcame his past by slowly embracing more progressive social views and owning up to his mistakes.

quote:

Five years later during the senator's eulogy, Biden described Byrd as "fiercely devoted to his principles," a "friend," "mentor" and a "guide"—comments which have brought Biden fresh criticism as he enters the final stretch of his campaign for president.

So maybe Byrd actually changed his stripes OR he might have just wanted influence and said what people wanted to hear (because he's a politician)?

Consider me at least a bit skeptical.

I want them to run this take at a BLM rally and see how that goes down.

This should be enough to warrant no one caring about what title he held, because he definitively was a true believer in what the KKK stood for.

Byrd recruited 150 people

Wow. I always figured that Byrd's KKK involvement may have been exaggerated a bit by the right. Like maybe it was just 'networking' for business purposes, and he never really got involved with the movement.

But recruiting 150 is far more damning than I imagined. I had heard he did some recruiting, I figured it was a handful maybe, but 150 speaks volumes.

i'm not sure anyone being 'high enough up' in the KKK to have some fricked up title like that is any better or worse.
