Why the hell was the guy on the roof to begin with?

That really makes no sense. If there is any known gunman then they should have removed Trump immediately from the stage. He is the obvious potential target and would have potentially immediately ended the threat. Then they could have went and got him.
I am kind of surprised if civilians saw him there wasn’t more uproar going on beforehand.

Why didn't the SS have their own guy(s) on that roof?

20 seconds is a long fricking time my guy.
Anyone who says “only 20 seconds” knows jack shite about close combat.
20 seconds is 21 seconds too late.

The bigger question is why was he the only one on that huge roof overlooking the stage?

If I had to guess, I would say the Secret Service sniper waited until the gunman fired because he didn't know exactly who he was engaging on the roof.
If he saw someone on a building overlooking the stage who had a rifle and he didn’t know about an agent posted on that building then he should have shot him without hesitation. Anything else is poor training.

That’s like their one job in life. So to be faced with the idea that they knew what they were doing when their “zero hour” moment struck isn’t real shocking to me. But that’s just me.

Don't worry. The FBI is leading the investigation. Settle down. All your questions will be answered.

You were expecting to be briefed at each juncture in the investigation or something? What are you expecting to hear? Assuming he was a lone wolf as this seems to be heading, there ain’t a whole lot of bombshell information likely to be had. At least not much more than a reasonable mind already suspects.
It will be Congress that is tasked with the review of the aspect of SS preparation and response.

He was probably easy to find because there was only one building nearby that offered a perfect shot. The one they decided not to secure.
My "conspiracy theory" meter is pegged out. Just remember a conspiracy theory is only a theory until proven true. we shall see.

Neither one of those guys fired.
ETA:...in the video, at least.

This is really looking suspiciously like security detail complicity. I really hope not, but nothing will surprise me any more.
If true, not sure winning this election will make a difference with deep entrenched evil.
Secession, national divorce, balkanization, up to civil war need to become normalized options. Nothing less.

Thank God the SS was there to shoot the guy who got on the roof of the closest building possible to attempt assassinating Trump.
I think what you mean is “Thank God the SS was there to shoot the guy who got on the roof of the closest building possible to attempt assassinating Trump after he was able to get off nine shots, rather than shooting him the millisecond he popped his head up over the edge of ther roof”
Columbine: 1.5 hours after the shooting started, 50 minutes after the guys killed themselves
Virginia Tech: 45 minutes after the shooting started
Las Vegas: 52 minutes after the shooting started, 39 minutes after the guy killed himself
Parkland: 60 minutes after the shooting started, 25 minutes after he ordered a number Seven Six Inch Wheat no onion
Uvalde: 1 hour 40 minutes after the shooting started
Butler County: “let him get some shooting in, then shoot back if the mood strikes you”
Cool pattern

Pretty sure everyone picked up what I was putting down.

The counter sniper team in the video (positioned left of stage) did not have a line of sight on the shooter. Appears a tree (not the tree in video) was blocking their view - they are farther behind the stage then they appear in video. The other counter sniper team positioned on the building to the right of the stage actually had line of sight on the shooter.
Google maps doesn’t do it justice. You have to see an actual shot of the rally set to see.

“Say, just looking at this venue, where should we put people?“
“How about on the buildings directly behind the podium, and on that building 130 yards North, and on the rooftops 500 yards West.”
“Yep, that limits shooters to ground, or to windows in those buildings 500 yards West. We need a plan to cover those windows on ground, between the venue and those buildings”
“OK, keep going, what else?”

That’s very easy. The shooter was exposed on a roof. Once the shot was fired it was relatively easy to locate the shooter.
