Rand Paul among lawmakers opposing TikTok ban bills: ‘I think it’s a mistake’

I tend to agree with Rand on most things. If he's against it, we need to pay attention.
No potential for abuse of power there.

quote:
“I think it’s a really bad idea. And people need to ask themselves, why does the Chinese government ban TikTok, and do we want to emulate the Chinese government? So I think it’s a mistake,” Paul said. “If you ban a social media platform, you know, I don’t know if you get any clearer that that goes against the First Amendment.”
quote:
Paul’s opposition comes as bills have been introduced in Congress in recent months to directly ban the downloading and use of the app and to grant the Commerce Department the authority to review and possibly ban technologies linked to foreign adversarial governments.
No potential for abuse of power there.
quote:
Paul mentioned that the court system already blocked an attempted ban from the Trump administration in 2020, and courts might block any potential ban again.
“I’m for the First Amendment to the Constitution, which says that companies that operate in the United States, we shouldn’t limit their speech, or people who try to broadcast speech on those platforms,” he said.

As usual, he is exactly right.
I so wish we could all coalesce and vote for him and not even Trump or Desantis.

Bill is co-sponsored by John Thune and Mark Warner and supported by the White House. That alone should make any sane conservative a no vote.

Banning a foreign enemy, in any matter, is GOOD!
Social media
Land purchases
Trade Secrets
and so on.......

Agree. End result will probably be a great firewall of America- similar to the great firewall of China. Except instead of everyone being hit with pro-nationalistic propaganda like China has, we'll be hit with anti-America/anti-Christian/anti-nonwoke/pro-woke/pro-lgbt propaganda.

All the info I've been reading on this bill makes it sound like the patriot act part 2. If the Apple and Google app store want to ban tiktok, I support it. I don't think we need any more invasions of our privacy by the government though.

Which means the government can't force them to carry all content or punish them for disallowing particular content.

The call for banning TikTok reminds me of Animal House when Otter and Boone lament that their pledges were getting hazed. “They can’t do that to our pledges; only we can do that to our pledges.”
“They can’t spy on our citizens; only we can spy on our citizens.”

If it just banned TikTok that would be one thing but since when did the govt not take an opportunity to piggy back all their goodies on the back of something people can support.
It's called the Restrict Act and it appears to be pretty sinister in nature with some describing it as the Patriot Act on Steroids.

Yep, I understand the use of a VPN can get you plenty of prison time and goooooooooooooooooberment fines that are protected from a BR filing.

Russell Brand agrees. Short story: 'Sure Tik Tok is collecting data on you....but so is everyone else.'

BINGO... TikTok won't give 3 letter agencies access is the real issue.

Instead, grant the Commerce Department the authority to review and ban technologies linked to foreign governments which themselves ban similar technologies.

I think this is why they're pumping up the Gwyneth Paltrow trial - diversion from this.

I agree totally with Rand. Look, Tik Tok sucks and has been used to poison the minds of our children, all by design. In China, it’s educational and uplifting.
Let’s look beyond banning Tik Tok and focus on the verbiage in this bill. Basically it gives them (folks in DC) cart Blanche to arrest anyone they feel is interacting with a foreign entity- selling, buying, etc…
Who’s a foreign entity that would get you arrested?? Why, anyone THEY name as one! This would be like the Patriot Act on steroids for the internet.

What a shock that Rand is spot on. Again.

We need better data privacy laws that apply to any and every company, or entity. Tiktok is just an easy scapegoat because China.
The fact is, their app and algorithm is much better at being engaging than what Meta, Snap, Google offer as alternatives currently.

I early voted for him in 2016 and then he dropped out the next day before Texas even held their primary.
I’d vote for him or Massey before Trump or DeSantis.

Yet another good reason not to allow Chinese companies to operate in the US

I'm not sure I have ever disagreed with Rand. A few times I questioned him, but after further research, he was right.
Same with Thomas Massie.
(I obviously have not studied every decision they have made, so I'm sure I would disagree with something. I doubt it would be something high profile.)
Kentucky has a couple of bad-arse legislators in DC.
