think I would have done better to go to one of the 2 year technical colleges and get to work sooner

Me as well. I would have finished the 4 year later with employer paying.

knowing what I know now, I would have enlisted in the Coast Guard and hopefully been stationed at a place where I could have started college part time.

Jogs an old memory....
When the draft during Viet Nam war went lottery for the first time I knew a student named Pat whose birthday was #1. He was toast. So, instead of being drafted he went into the Coast Guard with a long commitment. He was a tiny nerd but an amazing math genius. He took Calculus I,II, III and IV his freshman year and aced all of them.
I have no idea what the guard did with him.

I was accepted to Columbia but my parents balked at the tuition. based on what I know now:
should have taken loan and grappled for grants.

yes would have changed major. after I graduated I immediately went to a j.c. and took three computer programming courses in one semester and did programming and design my whole life.

I sometimes taught computer programming. no way I got those jobs if no degree.

In order of importance:

1) Would have done a 2 year votech deal.

2) Different one.

3) Would have received a business degree and gone Pre-Law.

My answers to any one of the three questions has varied at different times over the years. All I can say at this point in my life is that I am happy where I am, and with what I have planned for the future.

a. Yes. My profession requires it. I wasn't good at anything else.
b. 50-50. Knowing what I know now, yes. But being a socially awkward kid back then going to school close to home helped.
c. No, like I said, what I do is the only thing I've ever been good at.

I have four kids. Two of them will defiantly go to college because it will help them. The other two aren't school material and would be better suited for a trade school or apprenticeship. I'm not going to force a round peg in a square hole by forcing them to go to college when they don't need it.

The biggest regret I have, is not going to community college to take my pre requisites. Would have saved a lot of money and probably time.

It is a difficult question to answer because I'm not unhappy with the way my life has turned out to date, and choosing another path could have resulted in a different life than what I have now. So, assuming I would still end up with the same wife and children...

quote:

a. Would you go to college at all?

Yes

quote:

b. Would you go to the same college or a different one?

Different. I would have have left the state, or at least my hometown, in order to spend those great years in a new place, meeting (more) new people

quote:

c. Would you have selected a different major?

Partially. I probably would have kept the same general overall major, but focused on a different concentration within that major

I went to LSU for 8 years…frick no I wouldn’t change that. Graduated in physics and EE (MS)…I mean I would have fathered get an MS in ME, but there was more overlap with EE and CAMD, where I worked, had projects for EE.

Listening to a story last week on America's First News Radio regarding a study on 'regrets of college'. The polling questions were about 'If you could do it over again.....'
a. Would you go to college at all?
b. Would you go to the same college or a different one?
c. Would you have selected a different major?

Was curious to see how this board would answer the 3.

Quality post.

a. Would you go to college at all?

Probably not, and I have more than one degree.

quote:

b. Would you go to the same college or a different one?
The same ones. Auburn, Utah, Florida. All good schools that I felt fortunate to attend.

quote:

c. Would you have selected a different major?
Yes. I started in ChemE and would have stuck it out. I chose an easier path in undergrad just to get my shingle. It all worked out but was still a bitch move that I regret to this day. The younger me didn't always have it together.

A. Yes
B. Yes, I attended a small four year college. Tuition was affordable for my parents. I did not go into any debt nor did my parents.
C. I don't know. While I am not employed using the degree I got, the job I have requires a degree so it worked out well.

I've been working in my field for over 20 years. I don't make great money, but I earn a decent salary, have great health insurance, a 401(k) and paid time off.

I own a small home. It doesn't have all the fancy appliances or fancy floors, but I own it.

I am a single woman in her 40's, so I do ok.

Back in the mid-80's not everyone went to college, so I am very happy I went to college. When you got out of college, a college degree really meant something, not so much now.

I would absolutely would go back to Alabama! Sending 2 kids there now.

I love my job, so would major in the same.

I think college taught me so much more than I learned in the classrooms. I was the youngest of 5 and lived a sheltered life, so I really grew up in my years at Bama. I push my own 2 kids to learn to do things on their own too.
