I love NASA and the our space programs like nothing else. First watch I ever bought for myself was a Speedy Pro. The original, btw, that's still NASA's certified watch and the first watch worn on the Moon.

In 1969 I was lying on the living room floor, watching a BW TV and watched Neil Armstrong step off the Eagle's (Lunar Module) ladder....., it was one of the top 2 memories from my childhood.

The space shuttle Enterprise is part of the exhibit. It is the most impressive thing you will see and is gigantic.

Na!

Not impressive. The enterprise was constructed without working engines or heat shields.

It was nothing more than a big model.

Was that the one that was at the 1984 New Orleans Worlds Fair?

but we've ignored our program for the last 10 years or so

More like 30 years. As soon as it became evident that the Shuttle would not be sustainable in the cheap reusable system where launches would take place constantly they should’ve started planning for the replacement system. After Challenger it should’ve been escalated.

You damn sure aren’t going to create a new STS on the back of a napkin

The lack of a significant space program in the USA is a travesty.

Space exploration should be considered one of the top 3 most important funding targets of our federal government.

The moon has 3/5ths the gravity of the Earth.

It is one of the only reasonable staging area for serious manned outer planet exploration.

The other and possibly the best would be a huge space station at a Lagrange point with L4 and L5 being the most likely candidates

Escape velocity from the moon is 2.4km/sec, from earth, 11.2km/sec.

pretty sure its all about mars now but a permanent established research base on the moon would be the better launch facility to build and send things there

Not just a manned mission to the moon...OP said a research base on the moon. This would mean continuous, permanent human habitation of the moon. That's big...and expensive. A nation committing to such an undertaking would see many advantages, both good (technological advances, possible mineral wealth, a stepping off point to Mars and the asteroids) and bad (getting the upper hand militarily).

I would love to think it could happen. The fact that everyone here, no matter political affiliation, is in favor, means it probably should happen.

The advancement of space exploration by reinvigorating our space program.

The furthering the tech required to save our species by pushing us to the far reaches of space.

The concept of space travel and exploration is one of the most important scientific endeavors of all time.

As a liberal. I FULLY SUPPORT this.

Its not about PC pandering. Its about progress in technology.

Absolutely! Many of the technologies we enjoy today and think nothing about came as a direct result of the space program. I think that it could be argued that space exploration has more than paid for itself. We need to think big again.

We can't get back to the Moon right now. We don't have the infrastructure, the rockets, or the spacecraft to do the job (maybe modified Soyuz). If we want to get to Mars, we have to at least be able to get to the Moon. We took all of that capability and destroyed it in the 70's. The shuttle and space station(s) have their place, but we should never have stopped manned interplanetary exploration. If we had built on Apollo, where would we be now? We took 45 years of potential and flushed it down the crapper.

We went from starting from scratch to the moon in 8 years with slide rules, and main frame computers with less power than what I am using now. Much of that 8 years to test concepts like orbital rendezvous, and if man could even survive a mission that long. We don't have to reinvent the wheel for much of the program, we still have the knowledge acquired in the 60s. With the advancements we have had in materials, component density, and other technology we could complete a lunar mission in probably 3 years if it was funded with the same percentage of the budget as the Apollo program.

No one answered your question.

China does and has plans for manned mission.

I believe India is sending things as well. Have to looked up manned flight.
