POTUS says we're going back to the moon, no more begging the Russians for a ride.

Looks like Trump is sick of the USA not being the premiere space super power. I've been waiting for this forward thinking leadership for awhile. People, since 2011 the US has depended on the Russians to take our azzes up to the Intl Space Station, Trump just said frick that BS, we'll build a research base on the moon.

No link yet, presser just finished up! :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa:

Liberals will melt because Trump is going to redirect funds from Earth science to manned space flight.

Going to the moon is so 20th century. Does anyone even go to the moon anymore?

Right now NASA is only 0.12% of GDP. Let’s get it to at least 1.0%.

Liberals would not make a very good heat shield for re-entry, they melt too easy!!

The U.S. is still the preeminent space power, but we've ignored our program for the last 10 years or so. And that's a shame. Moving on to new frontiers may well be the most American thing of all time.

It's a planned jumping off point for further exploration, I did mention forward thinking leadership in the OP.

Go to the USS Intrepid Museum in NYC. The space shuttle Enterprise is part of the exhibit. It is the most impressive thing you will see and is gigantic. You don't get an appreciation for one of these things until you're standing below it and walking around it. On the floor, below the nose is a Soyuz 6 capsule, 3 man, that we now hitch a ride on to the International Space Station. It is as small as a Volkswagen Beetle and looks more primitive. It is a national embarrassment that we have to send men into space in one of these after doing so for decades in something far more impressive. I am all for spending more money on our space program.

I love NASA and the our space programs like nothing else. First watch I ever bought for myself was a Speedy Pro. The original, btw, that's still NASA's certified watch and the first watch worn on the Moon.

The moon has 3/5ths the gravity of the Earth.

It is one of the only reasonable staging area for serious manned outer planet exploration.

The other and possibly the best would be a huge space station at a Lagrange point with L4 and L5 being the most likely candidates

So to put it in man on the street terms, we went from a pimped out Escalade, riding in style, to a damn Yugo!

We can't get back to the Moon right now. We don't have the infrastructure, the rockets, or the spacecraft to do the job (maybe modified Soyuz). If we want to get to Mars, we have to at least be able to get to the Moon. We took all of that capability and destroyed it in the 70's. The shuttle and space station(s) have their place, but we should never have stopped manned interplanetary exploration. If we had built on Apollo, where would we be now? We took 45 years of potential and flushed it down the crapper.

Na!

Not impressive. The enterprise was constructed without working engines or heat shields.

It was nothing more than a big model.
