This was one of the only things i was looking forward to in a Trump presidency

I'd say tax everyone an additional $10 a year for the NASA budget.. this kind of R&D.. it pays off.

The fact that the most noteworthy thing a NASA astronaut has done in the past 25 years is drive across the country in her diapers to try to kill her side piece's side piece is a fricking travesty.

I would voluntarily give $100 to a space exploration fund. If you get millions of like minded Americans pulling on the rope together extraordinary things can be accomplished.

Scientists have found a new solar system filled with planets that look like Earth and could support life, Nasa has announced.

At least three of the seven planets represent the “holy grail for planet-hunting astronomers”, because they sit within the “temperate zone” and are the right temperature to allow alien life to flourish, the researchers have said. And they are capable of having oceans, again suggesting that life could flourish on them.

No other star system has ever been found to contain so many Earth-sized and rocky planets, of the kind thought to be necessary to contain aliens.

The researchers might soon be able to find evidence of life on the planets, they have said. British astronomer Dr Chris Copperwheat, from Liverpool John Moores University, who was part of the international team, said: “The discovery of multiple rocky planets with surface temperatures which allow for liquid water make this amazing system an exciting future target in the search for life."

...

In all, there might be 40 billion potentially habitable words sitting just in our galaxy, the Milky Way, astronomers estimate.

Scientists have long thought that Earth-sized planets were abundant, but the new research shows just how many of them there might be. Many of those planets might never be seen, because they don’t pass in front of their host star and so aren’t visible.

That might mean that the new system is actually not all that out of the ordinary. Scientists expect that for each planet we find, there are as many as 100 we can’t see – and so the scientists might not actually have been lucky, but rather seen something that wasn’t that unusual.

If Trump does a Moon Landing by July 24th 2019, I’ll French kiss him. I’ve been long counting on that date being a day of incredible rage for me, but if he’s able to orchestrate a 50th Anniversary Landing, I’ll heavily consider voting for him in reelection depending on his competition. If it’s someone like Hillary or Bernie, then he’s got my vote if he does this. Nothing could get me to his side quicker.

I'd vote for him purely for space exploration too. Conservation of entire planets probably outweighs conservation of the environment on this planet.

We can't get back to the Moon right now. We don't have the infrastructure, the rockets, or the spacecraft to do the job (maybe modified Soyuz).

Really? We couldn’t build the Saturn V again? It would be much lighter given the hardware we have today. I don’t buy this at all.

As it stands now manned space flight is a colossal waste of money. Until an affordable way off this planet is developed it simply doesn’t make any sense. We can do so much more with so much less if we focus on unmanned. The ISS is lovely but we would have got so much more ROI if we focused those funds to unmanned.

I’ve asked why manned space flight is so important in threads like this before but have yet to really get an answer other than "inspiration". That sounds in the same vein as Muslim outreach to me.

Meanwhile our unmanned projects are flying past Pluto and Jupiter and Mars, driving around on another planet, discovering exoplanets, about to discover what lies within the infrared spectrum at the farthest reaches of the observable universe, etc. The US still is the predominant space power as it’s doing the most science in space.

If we want to develop low cost methods to space I’m all for plowing as much money into that research as we need. It’s something that makes sense. Using current tech to establish a moonbase just because is a tremendous waste of resources.

respectively disagree.

We as a species are driven to climb mountains and explore the unknown because we can.

Obama set NASA back years when he canceled the planned moon landings.

I for one am happy to see Trump erase that mistake.

Considering or conservatives and Republicans are typically the ones that defund NASA and liberals usually want to fund it more I'm going to call b******* on everything you're saying. It's another classic example of you idiots projecting.

Liberals like the space program and you guys are usually against it but now that Trump wants to do it you're suddenly all for it.

Sporting that intellectually inept shine. Not a great look.

Star Trek is liberal utopia. Of course the left supports space travel.

NASA didn't exactly take a leap during Obama's tenure.

It's funding fell to half or less of a percent of the federal budget during his years.

It has been steadily falling since 1974, then the Bush senior admin increased the budget near the end of his admin to over 1%.

Awesome. It's about time that we got back into the space business. Too bad they shut down the space shuttles already.
