It’s not that hard for me to believe that someone could decide to look the other way. It’s not hard to believe that people would leave gaps in Trump’s security hoping he would get shot. POTUS detail? Absolutely. But even they have routinely failed in keeping threats away from POTUS...regularly.
Outside of that, in the non-POTUS details, the USSS is not some omniscient entity. They are too over-stretched, under-resourced, and too undermanned to do what people who base their expectations on Tom Clancy novels expect them to do.

Most of them, with POTUS/VPOTUS or off duty because they are waiting to go on duty for POTUS or VPOTUS.
I'd be surprised if Trump had more than a couple dozen USSS ground personnel in his detail Saturday, and not all of them would have been on shift. Advance work is done by the field offices for the most part.

This guy is an elected congressman, AND happens to have practical knowledge and experience with stuff like this. And he's going on record that this was so blatantly bad, that he's leaning toward it being intentional at some level. He tries to say he doesn't want to think that's the case, but it seems too obvious for him to ignore.

I'm still trying to link a government hit on Trump to a lanky 20 year old kid.
I can certainly agree that a fall guy could be recruited to carry out the most important part of the assassination plot, but to put all my eggs in the basket in this kid is hard to fathom.
