Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D) on Monday signed a law recriminalizing the possession of small amounts of drugs.

The law makes personal use possession a misdemeanor punishable with sentences of up to six months in jail. However, it also creates avenues for treatment instead of criminal penalties by encouraging law enforcement agencies to start programs that would move defendants toward addiction and mental health services.

Kotek said in a signing letter that “deep coordination” between courts, police, prosecutors, defense attorneys and local mental health providers is vital, adding that they are “necessary partners to achieve the vision for this legislation.”

In 2021, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize drug possession. However, the state has recently faced a large rise in overdose deaths and had the second-highest rate of substance abuse disorder in the U.S., according to a 2023 audit report.

Better idea is just confiscate the drugs.

If it's a large amount their boss will dispose of them for us.

Well who ever could’ve imagined….

There are some serious dumbazzes out there who literally have to learn things the hard way before a light clicks on in their skull.

Since this says it's about drugs I assume they have carved out an exemption for weed?

Unreal. If overdose death is not a deterrent what is?

So nothing happens, basically.

This is just another example of west coast states trying to not only undo their own shitty actions, but shift blame to the minority party that has no power.

Case in point, "Sideshow Bob" Ferguson, the WA Attorney General who went out of his way to demonize police and incentivize crime, is now trying to run on a platform of public safety in his campaign for governor, expecting (rightly so given King County) us to forget what he has done his entire time in office because his opponent was the one who caught the Green River Killer while in law enforcement.

Funny that "enlightened" liberals couldn't foresee this.

There's a difference between decriminalization and simply allowing open air drug use in highly public spaces. Portland could have still policed, they just chose not to.

Additionally, I believe psychedelics like psilocybin have been included in this new bill, which is really dumb. Pretending that mushrooms are the same as fentanyl is just silly.

And a lot of people lose the forest for the trees on this. Fentanyl is essentially a scourge everywhere. Louisiana has a higher per capita rate (a LOT higher) of fentanyl deaths than Oregon. The highest rate is in WV, where I'm pretty sure there has been no decrim. Many red states have higher fentanyl death rates than Oregon.

Oregon has done some dumb things, but they're not some crazy outlier in terms of actual results.

I just can't be bothered to care. They chose to do the drugs and reaped the consequences. We shouldn't limit freedom because people choose to overdose.

The overdoses were actually a good thing. Now we get to spend $100k per year per head trying to rehabilitate zombies.

My idea would be to have a homeless person accept Christ into their heart and then immediately administer a fatal dose of fentanyl into their bloodstream. Win / Win / Win / Win.

This is 100% about the homeless, who do not take shrooms

Who in their right mind would have thought legalizing drugs from the start would be a good thing? What a bunch of idiots.

Has to be the most moronic state in the Union and that is saying a lot. I do feel bad for the normal people in the Eastern part of the state, and hopefully they will make Greater Idaho happen one day.
