ISLAMABAD (AP) — The United States and Iran once again appear close to a deal to end the war and open the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Saturday that a deal aimed at ending the war in the Middle East is closer than ever before and expected to be finalized within 24 hours. Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the agreement, followed by technical-level talks next week.

But the White House did not answer questions about where things stood in negotiations or when a deal might be signed. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said no signing would occur Sunday, while leaving the possibility open for the coming days.

Previous declarations of an imminent breakthrough failed to materialize.

Iran exchanged fire with the U.S. and Israel earlier in the week, threatening to push the region back into a full-scale war. U.S. Central Command late Friday said on social media that it intercepted Iranian attack drones targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The war launched by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28 has rattled the region and virtually shut down oil and natural gas shipments from the Persian Gulf. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since April 7.

Here’s what to know:

A 60-day period would address Iran’s nuclear program

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday the terms of dealing with Iran’s nuclear program would be finalized in the 60 days after the initial agreement is signed and that the parties could decide to extend that period.

The U.S. and Israel fear Iran’s nuclear program could lead to an atomic weapon — a main reason their leaders cited for going to war. Tehran has insisted its nuclear efforts are for peaceful purposes.

A senior U.S. administration official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the White House, said Friday that the emerging agreement would begin the process of destroying or removing Tehran’s highly enriched uranium.

The official said the 60-day period after both sides sign the deal would be used to work out technical details for removing the uranium. The official did not say who the U.S. envisions taking charge of removing the uranium, which is believed to be entombed under three nuclear sites battered by U.S. strikes last year.

The panican panics over things outside of their control.

In this particular case, they were panicking over a statement made by an Iranian official, in other words Iranian propaganda. It was imported here and apparently taken as fact, by "GOP_Tiger", when he said, "No tolls, but Iran will collect "service fees." Then several more posters responded as if it was an accepted fact.

As I noted earlier in this thread, that poster ("GOP") paints themself as a conservative, but their views skew much more to the left. I knew that would eventually manifest in this thread too.

CEASFIRE (that’s not been an actual ceasefire) and now 60 days to ACTUALLY negotiate the nuclear issue.

SMH. Like someone said before, all we’ve done is legitimize this terrorist regime by negotiating with them.

Let's look at what the Israelis are saying about the deal.

TLDR: they aren't happy at all.

If, could, would, might, maybe

All for a deal that isn’t done from a source that may know nothing

Y’all waste too much energy on all this stuff when the guidelines were set 3.5 months ago

My views are exactly the same as those expressed by President Trump two months ago---and also exactly the same as those expressed by President Trump when he criticized President Obama for making a deal that enabled the mullahs to retrench themselves so that they could become an even greater danger in the future.

EDIT: And the Left is in no way shape or form in favor of removing the mullahs from power. The Left was again intervening in Iran from the beginning. Their views are the complete opposite of mine.

quote:

Even after last night’s briefing by a senior Trump administration official, it is difficult to ignore the major weaknesses in the emerging deal with Iran:

• The agreement could unlock up to $200 billion in sanctions relief and Gulf investment, providing the regime with a massive economic lifeline at precisely the moment it is under pressure.

• The deal appears to rely on the assumption that Iran will fundamentally change its behavior and stop sponsoring terrorism, despite decades of evidence to the contrary.

• No clear enforcement mechanism has been presented to prevent covert funding of Hezbollah, the Houthis, Iraqi Shiite militias, and other Iranian proxies.

• The ceasefire in Lebanon risks freezing the campaign against Hezbollah before its disarmament has been achieved.

• Israel may retain the right to respond to attacks, but it remains unclear whether Hezbollah will be allowed to rebuild infrastructure, rearm, recruit, and restore its capabilities as long as it avoids direct fire.

• There is a significant difference between the right to retaliate after an attack and the freedom to prevent military buildup before it becomes a threat.

• Even the nuclear verification and inspection mechanisms are still not fully defined.

• The administration’s own official placed the chances of success at only 75%, acknowledging the uncertainty inherent in dealing with Iran.

• Iran could begin benefiting from economic normalization and international legitimacy long before any long-term behavioral change is proven.

Breaking news "judge Boasberg of DC federal court rules Trump's peace agreement with Iran is a treaty requiring senate approval before going into effect"

Well that could happen.

It appears the banking system in Iran is under a cyber attack.

Does it really matter? I've been told that Iran is losing $400 million per day due to the blockade.

There is no money in the banks for anyone to withdraw.

I mean the US can sign any deals they want. Israel sure isn’t signing anything. They will finish the job that Trump TACO’d.

The left - Trump can’t bomb Iran. Trump must solve through diplomacy.

The left - Trump lost the war. Trump made a bad deal. Trump is weak ( because the left does not support the use of real American military power) and Iran out maneuvered Trump which is the inevitable conclusion when the left does not allow the use of our best negotiating tool which is our military.

What a joke.
