NYPD Officers Leaving In Droves, 75% Increase In Quitting Or Retirement In 2020

Shocker

The members of the NYPD grew so disenchanted with their jobs in 2020 that over 5,300 uniformed officers either retired or quit, an astonishing 75% increase over the year before, amounting to 15% of the total number of officers on the force. The impetus for the officers quitting seemed to be the death of George Floyd and the unrest that followed; between May 25 and June 24, 2020, a whopping 272 officers left the force in one month.
2,600 officers quit and 2,746 filed for retirement, according to the New York Post. The 5,346 officers who left the force were nearly 2,300 more than left the force in 2019, when 1,509 officers quit and 1,544 filed for retirement.
This year, over 830 officers have left the NYPD. Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, warned, “Cops are forming a conga line down at the pension section and I don’t blame them. NYPD cops are looking for better jobs with other departments or even embarking on new careers.”

Wait until the Social Workers find out that they are going to be reassigned and sent out on domestic disturbance calls.
You think the cops are having a mass exodus.....

Hell, even Tom Selleck must be thinking of moving Blue Bloods to Dodge City, KS.

NYPD cops close to retirement should only worry about doing the bare minimum. Wait for the crime to be finished and then go in and put up the yellow tape, tag the bodies, write up the reports and then go home.
And then once they finally hit the magic number for retirement, hightail it out of the city for Florida or a similar red state that believes in traditional way of life and offers no safe haven to batshit communists.

This person in the comment section hits the nail on the head...

Lawless streets eventually require martial law or totalitarianism. We are in the midst of a cultural revolution that will result in Communism. Trump and his achievements as well as supporters scared the people who have been inching us there. Now there is abig push to get it done before we can vote them out and undo the damage.

So 7% of their workforce left for other jobs and another 7% retired?
What a normal rate for a private sector company? Mine has 58 and 4 people leaving and 4 retiring every year doesn’t seem like much.

You reap what you sow and the white flight from New York will be glorious

Suppose your company lost 8 employees every year, and could only find 2 capable new hires. You'd be at <50% staff in just five years.
ETA: Now consider if, instead of a private company, you were a public utility with major budget deficits due to a massive reduction in tax revenues, and your options for replacing lost staff is severely curtailed. You might not be able to afford more than 2 new hires despite losing 8 former employees. That's the situation at my work currently (hiring freeze)...

I unfortunately live in NYC (not Manhattan) due to various reasons but just the other week wife and I had a serious talk about where we can move and still be able to commute to work.
They try to stifle how bad crime has gotten but everyone knows it's bad. Even the MTA (they run the subways) had to come out and say "our commuters worry about crime more than Covid" and released a poll showing as such to try to pressure the city into cracking down on crime.
City and NYPD's response was that MTA was fear mongering.
At this point I have no empathy for NYPD...they occasionally speak out but for the most part they're going along with orders.
As others mentioned, anyone close to retirement or smart are getting out, the only officers left will be people who cannot get any other kind of employment. As Trump would say, "They aren't sending their best!".
City is losing tax payers every month.
Instead of cracking down on crime they use NYPD to enforce / trap BS traffic laws as a means to generate revenue.
There was an article a few months ago about how NYPD was setting up fake construction zones to surprise and trap people with sudden "construction zone speed limit" and be able to fine extra $$$ since it's a "construction zone".
That's just one example...I've seen other BS schemes they've come up with to fine as much as possible.
Anyway sorry for the long rant, I know it's my own fault for being in NYC but it's a sh*t hole.

We haven’t felt the pain yet.

DeBlasio dissolved the street crime unit. They are the cops that actually catch criminals. Crime is skyrocketing.

I'd be interested to see what the enrollment numbers are going to be for upcoming Police academies in states such as NY or Cali.

I would rather they not come to FL but, along those lines, spend all your ny pension money down here helping our economy

This is going to revitalize the organized syndicate protection rackets. Better to pay someone who will actually protect your neighborhood...
