You should legally be allowed to shoot that person

If memory serves me correctly, this was the "Nicky Santoro" approach...

This is what we want to happen.

There should be no such thing as "rent stabilization laws". Let landlords charge what the market will bear.

Why would he not just sell it?
Are you interested in buying a rental property that has a tenant paying no rent?

Negative.

You tell a local drug addicted citizen, desperate for money, that you will pay them 100 bucks to catch them outside and beat the hell out of them. And another hundred if he brings someone to help.

Then in New York, the squatter goes to the hospital, the drug addicted individual gets in and out of custody in one evening, and you are the new "squatter" once you go in, throw out their stuff, and take up residence enough to be protected yourself by the laws.

Just remember, don't be there when it goes down or the cops show up. If they do.

I obviously know nothing of the process of evicting someone, but why can’t the landlord wait for the squatter to leave one day, go in and change the locks?

The squatter has to leave to get something to eat.

You can’t do that. Any eviction must go through the court system.

Then squat on the squatter and let him go through the court system.

I know a couple guys in Bensonhurst who could have taken care of this for him ab initio. Probably too late now.

That guy has a TV show now, showing him getting squatters out by moving in with them and driving them crazy until they leave.

It would be a shame if a "stranger" broke in and caused him some injuries.

What he needs is protection and there are people who can offer such protection in NYC for a reasonable fee.

I dont know how squatting ever became a thing much less law. I mean how stupid of a civilization are we??

It's always been a thing - Back in the '40s one of my dad's tasks was to 'lay eyes on' every acre of the company's land -- If someone occupied a piece of property as their home peacefully for a period of time ( I recall it was 8 years, may have been 10) then that property became their property.

If my dad found someone 'squatting' he would report the situation to the court house and the sheriff's Dept would take care of it.

It was a problem back during the depression era.

Not sure how legit this is, but apparently a woman who owns a second home in Colorado had a squatter, and after 2 years of inaction by local authorities, she signed a legal lease agreement with a professional harasser who (on behalf of the owner) moved into the squatted house. He declared himself to the squatter as a legal tenant, and proceeded to annoy the ever-living frick out of her until she agreed to leave - even signing a legal document that she did so willfully.

Problem solved.
