Fake News.
But as it will undoubtedly snake its way into the MSM as presumptive fact, it's worth a thread here. CNN's lede will lament something like this: "Torch-bearing GOP brownshirts want to obliterate your 1st Amendment rights."

New Poll: 43% of Republicans Want to Give Trump the Power to Shut Down Media

by Sam Stein
08.07.18

The ‘enemy of the people’ talk is working. A plurality of self-identified Republicans say they want Trump to have the power to take ‘bad’ media outlets out.

Freedom of the press may be guaranteed in the Constitution. But a plurality of Republicans want to give President Trump the authority to close down certain news outlets, according to a new public opinion survey conducted by Ipsos and provided exclusively to The Daily Beast.

The findings present a sobering picture for the fourth estate, with respondents showing diminished trust in the media and increased support for punitive measures against its members. They also illustrate the extent to which Trump’s anti-press drumbeat has shaped public opinion about the role the media plays in covering his administration.

The poll was provided courtesy of IPSOS which terms itself a "nonpartisan" organization. It was an online poll with 1003 respondents (36%R, 32%D, 21%Ind -- you won't see those proportions in future IPSOS election polls ) distilled from all self-identifying participants. However, 55% of the supposed independents view CNN as "trustworthy."

85% overall agreed that “Freedom of the press is essential for American democracy." That number included 83% of Republicans. Yet according to Stein, somehow supposedly 43% of the same group "Want to Give Trump the Power to Shut Down Media."

Doesn't seem to make sense, does it?

Well, it should not surprise anyone that Sam Stein and the Daily Beast flatly lied about that last stat. The 43% actually said "The president should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior." 12% of Dems and 21% of Indies agreed.

A large majority of each group, and 72% overall, also felt "It should be easier to sue reporters who knowingly publish false information."

And yet the press won’t cover the Dems leaning hard on Facebook, Apple, Twitter, etc, to throw off dissenting voices.

You don't think state television would be great? Get your news straight from TrumpTV with no outside questions allowed.

Count me in as well

When the press becomes the defacto 4th branch of government it’s time to shut it down and reevaluate

Same goes with the left leaning Facebook twitter and other tech super giants that control the narrratve of dialogue in this country.

Except they always publish them.

So having the authority close news outlets does not mean has the power to shut down the news outlets?

Yup. Especially when they do it knowingly.

Asking questions and offering debatable dialogue are wonderful. However, that is not what the “media” that we are subjected to are in business for.

What I don’t have a problem with is stifling hateful and divisive garbage that spews from the mouths of so called journalists and reporters. There’s a huge difference in beneficial news coverage and propaganda driven disinformation.

I don't believe anyone should be shut down, including InfoWars.

What people need to realize is, CNN is every single bit as stupid and crazy as InfoWars.

So you support shutting down private companies because you don’t agree with the way they run their own business?

I will wholly support your appointment to the Josef Goebbels seat at the soon to be established Department of Propaganda

I don't like CNN and MSNBC, etc. I think they are way too liberal and condescending towards conservatives, but I don't want anyone censoring, I certainly don't want to be the one telling you what you should read or believe because, I would have eliminated InfoWars, Gateway Pundit and anything with the tinfoil hat conspiracies like the guys who put out Pizzagate, etc.

More speech, more press, more writing, etc. he cure for speech you don't like, is more free speech......unless you live in Covington and West St. Tammany where you are required to think in lock step

It’s not an online poll that anyone can access. They recruit people nationally to be participants and people register to be a participant. They’re then verified and screened initially, and then they monitor their participation with validity checks. It’s a lot like how they norm and standardize IQ tests. Obviously every methodology has flaws, but it’s a lot more extensive and systematic than some random online poll.

I think polls like this are stupid and I’d probably vote yes in it just to piss someone off. Just like if I came across a twitter poll that asked who the greatest auburn QB of all time was, I’d vote for Jeremy Johnson.
