The positions I had were academic staff and was considered faculty. I cannot recall at any point in my higher Ed career where faculty had rooftop access at an institution where I was employed.

If I was a soulless, authoritarian lefty goon in China or Russia, I'd think this would be a moderately risky, high reward, from their perspective, way to inject mass social and political instability into the US.

I think it's a liberal with mental issues, personally. But this thread was pushing into CT discussion territory.
The foreign agent theory has been discussed a bit and would work, for reasons you stated. If it's a "pro" this one makes the most sense. This is the kind of shite Russia and China has relied on, online for years. It would be quite the escalation, though. I wouldn't say if they were caught it would be a declaration of war, but it would remove the veil for a lot of people (especially Russia). Doesn't seem to work on the risk:reward scale for Russia, because this would risk losing them what support they have in the US.
But the domestic "they" is what I was talking about (what you quoted).
