Your expectation was that debt reduction would take less than a month?

No actual cuts have even been proposed yet. The CR is up in a few weeks as well.

People aren't talking about that because of all the flashy DOGE-related content (like this story).

But, ignoring that, sending checks to people with the money we're supposed to be using for deficit/debt reduction eliminates the plan entirely.

Just lower or completely eliminate income tax. That would be a nice way to repay me.

Sounds like something Trump would do based on his first administration... with his signature of course.

Pay down the debt...

Wasn't everyone complaining that Biden handing out checks during COVID is what caused all of the inflation?

You have advocated before for raising taxes so I am not sure what your position is. Can you enlighten us?

Cut tax rates going forward, and spend the savings against the debt.

Put safeguards in place to make sure we never fall into this trap again.

It's a no from me until we run a budget surplus. The "savings" taken from silly spendings aren't savings while we're running a deficit.

While me and the hubby would love an extra 10k, this probably defeats the purpose.

This. Even with DOGE savings, we are still in a borrowing state. The 5k would be borrowed. It literally negates any savings.

Until we achieve a budget surplus there is no savings to give to the people, only borrowed stimulus.

The idea sounds good at face value, but have we learned nothing in the last 4 years from the impact of flooding the economy with cash on inflation?

To prevent that you could always just provide a $5k reduction on actual taxes due, which will certainly bump refunds for some taxpayers but wouldn't flood the economy with billions of dollars all at once.

Do 50% of savings.
To all tax filers.

I hate it.
It should be either towards debt, or only to actual taxpayers as in pay a net tax burden.

But, the cuts need to be huge.
People will see families members and friends affected.

This would neutralize those negative feelings.

Notice how the same people who freak out over the insignificance of the amounts found being spent fraudulently also freak out when someone suggests the taxpayers should get the money back.

Why? Those fricking elected crooks took millions maybe billions. Five thousand is a drop in the ocean compared to what was stolen from the taxpayers. I'll take your 5K if you don't want it.

This illustrates why real spending cuts will not happen anytime soon.

Deficit spending causes inflation. When we spend more than we take in with revenue, we have to issue treasury bonds to fund additional debt. This artificially increases the supply of money which raises prices.

I’d happily take a $5k tax credit. Just handing out a check is a bad idea.
