If you think Russia’s ultimate aim was to gain a portion of Ukraine then fine, maybe they won. But if you know what their real aim was - the reconstitution of the Russian empire - then they plainly lost.

Do you believe that? Their neighbors don’t. I have visited Kazahkstan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Croatia during this war. Most of those I discussed this with had a good laugh about Russia’s stated motives - DeNazification and protection of ethnic Russians. They all had stories of Russian imperial aggression over the centuries, during which the Russians used those exact justifications.

That was rhetoric, just like Ukraine engages in rhetoric. What are they willing to cease armed hostilities over? I think most everyone agrees they are not intent on fighting until they have incorporated all of Ukraine into Russia and they certainly have not said or indicated otherwise.

The war is waste of American power, and the sanctions are destroying the European economy, it will diminish them for generations, and thats not to speak of how they've been seriously damaged by mass immigration, although thats another problem. We all emerge from the war, weaker, our credibility damaged by defeat, and much less influential. Russia on the other hand, will emerge economically and technologically stronger, with the most modern and powerful army on the continent. And certainly the most experienced one. States will have to take Moscows opinions seriously in a way they haven't in almost 40 years.
The West has been in a collective decline since the end of the First World War, and this is really going to speed things up, in ways that we can't recover from. We'll just have to live with it. We will be poorer, the long term shift from the dollar, which we have precipitated through our stupidity, is really going to hurt ordinary people.

They already won. Sanctions made them stronger. Resolve among the Russian people has never been higher in their history. Their military is bigger and better than at any time since the USSR fell. They have not only stopped NATO expansion into Ukraine, they have NATO fractured. This is a series of L's for the west. Russia won. The longer this drags on, the bigger Russia's force becomes and the more untenable it becomes for NATO to do anything if it desires to do so in the future. Ukraine is done.
