That's likely the date it went public.

That’s what I’m reading now.

If OP is true then Safeway was not there until 86.

Consider this:
The Kavanaugh allegations are from 82. Ford left the area in 84 to go to Chapel Hill (where she stayed and graduated 4 years later in 88) and then she immediately began teaching in California at Stanford in 88, so wouldn't she remember it as and refer to it as the old name? And not the Safeway name she wouldn't have even been to? Especially if the incident occurred at a place Mike Judge worked and she went to often?

Okay I read some of the replies and apparently ‘86 is the year Safeway went public.

That's not true.

The initial public offering price of Safeway stock was $226 in 1927. A five for one split in 1928 brought the price down to under $50.

This seems unlikely, isn't the Bar pretty far left in most cases? I've seen a lot of legal types just shaking their heads at the fact that CPL hasn't been hit by the Bar.

There are people who investigate the BARs handling of their internal investigations. It can be left winging, but if it doesnt take the necessary steps to look into malpractice, they could face much bigger problems.

Saw something like that posted on Twitter. Someone then responded that Safeway was bought out in 1986 by a company called KKR and that's why it shows 1986 date.

In 1982 it was known as the "Squat and Gobble"..and then Safeway bought them out.

I think Safeway has been around since the 1920s. Not sure when it began in MD.

It’s spelled Kum N Go

And they’re all over the Upper Midwest.

I agree. I remember the Cum n Go tried to franchise, but it never really took off.
To be honest, I was kinda sad about that.

You can nix this thread if you’d like. The premise is wrong. I posted the info too quick without doing any due diligence.

According to the business filing for the state of Maryland, it was registered in 1986.

Why not just provide a link to the Maryland website for verification...would still need further data to confirm.

Or you can do it.

Oh, I did, but it's incumbent on the OP to provide support. Here you go: LINK

Also did some additional research and found that Safeway entered the Maryland market in 1928 with the acquisition of Eastern Stores ( LINK)

I don't know, maybe some skepticism of screen shots on twitter is warranted?

Potomac Village Safeway has existed since 1968 if we trust the WaPo

quote:

Castleberry said the Potomac Village Safeway has "wanted to expand almost from the time we came in there in 1968. But we were always told by residents that they liked things 'just the way they are'. . . . It has always been a low-key village concept."
