I would laugh but I know my tax dollars are going to bail out that shithole as soon as the next democrat get into the white house.

They are already tens of millions in the red and there is currently capital flight out of there. I sit in traffic with them, daily.

Yep. Stockholm is a good example. As Swedish economist Assar Lindbeck said : “In many cases rent control appears to be the most efficient technique presently known to destroy a city—except for bombing.”

What could possibly go wrong?
Hopefully everything.
Not being mean. They just need real-life to slap them into a new paradigm.

Seattleites are an odd group.
Downtown Seattle was a vibrant, fun place as recently as 5yrs ago. Following the "Chaz Zone" episode though, downtown Seattle basically died. Likewise, Seattle retail malls, and enclaves have closed or are in process of closing.

Seattleites lament the loss of both. They rue the inability to shop in-person, put hands on merchandise, try on clothes, etc. before purchasing.

But here's the kicker.

They don't blame the Chaz nitwits and subsequent lawlessness for turning their downtown into a deadzone. They don't blame shoplifting, theft, and vandalism for their mall closures.

Instead, they attribute Seattle techies as the cause.

They'll explain that Seattle is a hub of tech companies. So its residents just do all their shopping and commerce remotely, online. That, rather than lawlessness, is their explanation for the negative changes. It is what their information sources are telling them. It is what they actually believe.

We had some visitors from there recently.
They could not believe the thriving retail, restaurants, etc here. They were literally shocked our large malls were open and crowded. But they rejected wholecloth any premise other than their tech fantasy for the differential.

Perhaps they'll eventually figure it out. But for now, their unmoored-from-reality approach is something to behold.

Critics have called Wilson privileged and out of touch, as she regularly receives checks from her professor parents to pay for childcare. Those critics also highlight that Wilson dropped out of Oxford University just six weeks shy of graduation, leaving the school without debt thanks to her parents.

quote:

She told KUOW that when she moved to Seattle in 2004, she cut herself off from her parents' money and 'worked a bunch of working-class jobs.

quote:

Psychologically, it really did something to me,' Wilson said. In 2011, she founded the Transit Riders Union, a nonprofit focused on improving public transportation in Seattle and Kings County. Tax records show she earned close to $73,000 from the nonprofit in 2022 while working 55-hour weeks. Currently, her husband does not have a paying job. That means the couple's household income is below what would be considered enough money to support themselves and their child in Seattle. 'It just speaks to how expensive and unaffordable it is, right?' she told KUOW. 'If you're lucky enough to have parents who can pitch in a little bit, that's not something to be embarrassed about.'
