The Hill

quote:

Donald Trump had a pretty good run in Washington — rampaging through the Republican Party, driving the media to distraction, enraging the Democrats and treating his own co-partisans in the Senate like a bunch of valets. But that’s all about to end. And I predict it will end with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — as the new minority leader — incinerating Trump’s political future for good.

McConnell needs just 18 votes to finish off Trump. Conviction on impeachment can bring with it a ban on holding federal office — which includes the presidency. A two-thirds majority or 67 votes is necessary for conviction. For McConnell that means 18 votes if West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin opposes or 17 if Manchin joins in. (Preferably, McConnell would want to get to 68 votes so that no Republican could be accused of being the one vote that convicted Trump).

Good to know I didn't have to read past the underlined to know that I didn't need to take anything in that article seriously.

Nothing was legit about the last one and they still voted on that, what is different with this?

Not sure they can convict a private person? Once Biden is sworn in, he'll become a private citizen.

That’s a wish casting on a grand scale.

I guess Trump peed in his Cheerios.

It’s fine to war against someone because they peed in your Cheerios. I’ve done it. Just be honest about why you’re fighting.

It’s barely an editorial. And it’s written by a Republican operative.

The GOP is over for good if they vote to impeach. I won't even vote in their primaries if they do this.

The Hill is a DC insider rag IIRC.

In other words, swamp central. They want Trump gone permanently regardless of the validity of the charges.

Trump couldn't possibly win in 2024 as the GOP nominee, but he could/would destroy all Republican hopes of winning in 2024 by being the nominee.

We need someone like Cruz or Sasse.

They can't convict a private person. Impeachment and Senate prosecution is limited to the President. Citizens are under the jurisdiction of the Attorney General, not the Senate. The Attorney General could certainly prosecute Citizen Trump, but I don't think the Senate has jurisdiction over a private citizen.
