Man fights red light ticket; gets fined for practicing engineering without a license

Reason article
this may be the best/worst story about government i've heard in the past year or two
quote:
When Mats Järlström's wife got snagged by one of Oregon's red light cameras in 2013, he challenged the ticket by questioning the timing of the yellow lights at intersections where cameras had been installed.
Since then, his research into red light cameras has earned him attention in local and national media—in 2014, he presented his evidence on an episode of "60 Minutes"—and an invitation to present at last year's annual meeting of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
It also got him a $500 fine from the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying.
According to the board, Järlström's research into red light cameras and their effectiveness amounts to practicing engineering without a license.
quote:
Järlström is now suing the state board over that fine, arguing that it's unconstitutional to prevent someone from doing math without the government's permission.

Let the ninth circuit settle this one -

And there are people on this board who actually want more government.

That's awesome. Good luck with those Oregon judges.

Oregon state government sounds mad. Robbing citizens was probably funding their pensions.

Yay for the government! It's always looking out for our best interest!

Sounds like Jarlstrom was disagreeing with the consensus.

Practicing engineering without a license in any state should only be a fine if your work could potentially put someone's health or safety at risk. Otherwise? you are just suppressing someone from trying to solve a problem or find out new information. He would be wise not to pay the $500 fine, even if ordered to. I'd gladly face harsher penalties to stand against that kind of bullshite.

Are we sure Oregon wasn't a mistranslated "Louisiana"?

SO AWESOME!!!!!
I hope someone keeps up with this and lets us know how he does!

I don't have my degree let alone my license, but clients are constantly referring to me as the engineer. I usually say I'm not an engineer or I'm a pretengineer but sometimes I just don't say anything.
As long as I don't call myself an engineer I'm cool, right?

As a practicing PE this is total bull shite.

And I hope he wins his lawsuit.

In my eyes as long as you're not stamping something certifying yourself as a PE, then youre good.
Knowing math isn't a crime.

Generally you are right. There are some nuances by state. I don't recall what those nuances are. It's been 12 years since I took the PE.

First mistake was moving to Oregon.
