You'd have to build a wall around the city first to keep the chaos from spilling out. These big cities can't maintain the illusion of order without Federal money. The plan is that no matter how much debt they incur, it will eventually be monetized by the Federal reserve. You'll pay the resulting inflation tax.

So, I was correct. Thanks. You guys love your rage bait too. These are not new programs (the 3-K and pre-K programs stated in 2014 and 2017, respectively), and they have always been open to residents regardless of immigration status. Now, whether that is a good idea or not is a separate matter, but this isn’t some new Mamdani thing.

Because the budget may be from city funds, but the overall budget includes federal money. So yeah, it's a big deal. I doubt they'd still do this if their federal money dried up and left a hole to fill.

Every shortfall is eventually somehow covered by Federal funds.
Also, cities getting Fed funds for other BS allows them to use their funds for this sort of stuff instead of making more budget friendly desicions.
