I agree with that. I go further in saying we should cull more serious offenders.

My perception of your argument is that we need to approach incarceration as if every person is a rapist, murdered or child molester. I'm pushing back on that by pointing out that the vast majority of the prison population hasn't been convicted of those crimes and they will be released back into society. Do we want to release them after subjecting them to trauma at the hands of the State because some people in prison are rapists, murderers or child molesters? Or do we want them released with increased abilities to be good citizens and productive members of society?

Because they are ridiculous questions. Why would I be a hypocrite for calling the police? Does calling the police pull a lever that initiates an execution? You aren't making any sense. You're just making random emotional appeals.

Gracious. I'm trying as hard as I can to give you a life line and try to agree with you on some issues. I do not believe in one size fits all. Never did I suggest a guy who steals a sweater at Belk should get life. I would hope there would be rehab for those folks and first time offenders-- in general. But when someone commits a violent act I don't care about their rehab.

Now, if you would not hop on a Merry-Go-Round and constantly use circular logic and admit there are certain instances where someone should be incarcerated for life ---without a yeah, but -- you would have less pushback.

Well you better stop touting yourself as a philosopher then.

And they should say when they leave "I not doing a damn thing to go back in there again". But alas.

And again. You have refused over and over and over again to answer the question of how easy it is to just not go to prison at all.

quote:

Do we want to release them after subjecting them to trauma at the hands of the State because some people in prison are rapists, murderers or child molesters?

There you go again with their "trauma". No considerations for the people harmed.

quote:

Or do we want them released with increased abilities to be good citizens and productive members of society?

Exactly how far we going to go with this? We going to send a 5x felon to prison and then enroll him into some night classes at community college? You aren't the first person to think we can just completely resinsert people into society after some therapy, a dedicated shrink, and a social worker and we have the next Dr Ben Carson. In these areas that subscribe to this... is usually the places where "_____________ was killed today by a 10x felon that has been on probation and supervision" happens more frequently.

The way to stop recidivism is for them to not go the first time. This is correct at the youth and school age level. But we can't do that. That's racist. That's not "diverse". That's not "respect", that's not acknowledging "culture".

See your, and the people like you, problem is that you wanna get to them in prison. The place to do it is waaaay before.

If you want a real answer, its to follow medical protocols and ensure the government isn't violating the Constitution.

When have I ever done this? Good lord. I've never touted myself as anything other than person with ideas like everyone else. Why are you so intent on making this personal? Insecurity? Inability to tolerate disagreement?

Here you again with you government worship. You refuse to acknowledge that the government screws up, deliberately acts unethically, and breaks laws in pursuit of prosecutions and convictions. You refuse to admit that your all-good and benevolent government routinely infringes on the rights of Americans.

According to you, only wealthy, well-connected, powerful billionaires with well-paid legal teams and unlimited resources ever get treated unfairly by the government. You live in la-la land.

LWOP = life without parole

LWOP is an alternative to the death penalty that achieves the same justice that the death penalty achieves, without the vengeance. Certain crimes warrant LWOP.

One could take from your comments that poor people and or minorities should not be charged with crimes. You don't think that,do you?

How on earth could someone reasonably infer that?

you may want to check a few posts back where you were going on about your thinking, writing, and knowing more about the subject than others.

And of course.. as you know already.. I was being facetious about calling you and actual philosopher. But don't let that get in the way of you trying to steer attention away from the inconvenient part of posts.

quote:

Here you again with you government worship. You refuse to acknowledge that the government screws up, deliberately acts unethically, and breaks laws in pursuit of prosecutions and convictions. You refuse to admit that your all-good and benevolent government routinely infringes on the rights of Americans.

Government worship?? What the hell are you talking about? Just answer the question on how easy it is to not go to prison. How does that have anything to do with government?

You continued ignoring and diversion away from this tells a lot more than you could ever say.

And again... you are going on about the heavy hand of government... while you were previously complaining about the elimination of a government office.

quote:

According to you, only wealthy, well-connected, powerful billionaires with well-paid legal teams and unlimited resources ever get treated unfairly by the government. You live in la-la land.

Again... what does this have to do with the question on how easy it is to not go to prison??

And kudos yet again for ignoring another inconvenient quote of:

quote:

The way to stop recidivism is for them to not go the first time. This is correct at the youth and school age level. But we can't do that. That's racist. That's not "diverse". That's not "respect", that's not acknowledging "culture".

Because we just can't intercede in the early stages. That's not being "equitable" and "tolerant".

That's not how the budget operates in Louisiana. Money can't just be moved from the Department of Corrections to some other project because an inmate died.

Sweetie, money (and appropriations) is fungible. So, yes, if we execute inmates instead of keeping them alive, the cost of keeping said inmates drops. This can then turn to less budget needed for inmates, leading to moving money to other places in the next budget.

quote:

Not to mention that the state of Louisiana spends a minimum of $15.6 million per year to maintain its capital punishment system. There is nothing fiscally responsible about that.

Due to the length of time it takes to execute death row inmates.

How about a deal. All current death row inmates get life. From tomorrow forward, all violent offenders that receive a “life sentence” get 365 days of life and then get executed via bullet or rope.

See how quickly the cost of incarceration drops.

Now.

Innocent people also get executed. The last person sentenced to LWOP in Louisiana to be released was Henry Montgomery. Montgomery was originally arrested in 1963

Not with modern forensics, video evidence, and meta data from electronics.
