Anyone think leaving troops there will result in any type of stability- especially if the opposition throws out Assad? I do not.

ME countries need a bastard running things, or the crazies WILL take over.

why so crusty with GenLee? The neocons are mad but the talking point is (as always) it will leave a vacuum to suck all the bad guys back in. This can be handled with drones, no? So overall this is a good pullout but the 'politics' of it will have the Graham's having hissy fits. Exactly why? some promised slush funds capped at a couple mil and they want a couple tril?

In 2018, nobody should have to explain the fallacy of his thinking. He needs to know exactly how stupid his ideas are. If he wants to keep thinking like an idiot despite the immediate, ceaseless, harsh criticism, then good on him.

White man has been trying to tame that region for thousands of years. It's not happening.

That is one way out of this (avoiding a ground presence at least)... Give the Kurds a no-fly zone in NE Syria and tell Turkey we will launch airstrikes if any of their soldiers or jihadist goons step foot on Kurdish soil.

I would suggest that it is a sort of political God Complex to imagine that we can “ save “ the Kurds/South Vietnamese/Iraqis as infinitum from their enemies with American blood and treasure. It’s not a reasonable or achievable standard. It’s doomed to fail.

Trump made it clear in 2016 that this was not an indefinite project. I don’t blame him for making the hard and imperfect choice here.

Even more, the troops that are there have no infrastructure to do anything other than advise and assist the Kurds against ISIS positions. That's it. Having them there makes no sense. It wouldn't even achieve the NEOCON claimed objective, and to attempt to build up would certainly cause an immediate response from Iran, Turkey, Russia and Syria. All of whom are happy to have American bombs on targets. Turkey has played ball, in their own way so far but are extremely wary of US infrastructure in support of Kurdish communist terrorists on the southern border of a country battling Kurdish commie terrorists.

Well, I'm the last one to defend Trump, but he really had no choice. I mean, his Daddy Vladdy was really clear about his orders.

For one, ISIS is not defeated in Syria. They have been holding on in the Hajin pocket for over a year now with several thousand veteran troops. If we leave before they are cleared out there, they will take over some of NE Syria as the Kurds rush north to defend against Turkey.

Yep, we killed Saddam, who no doubt was a horrible person, and instantly, there was ISIS. They even took time to stop and take a picture with John McCain before destroying the country.

We will launch airstrikes on a NATO nation. This is getting better and better. Tell me more about these amazing Kurds who are so important that we would strike turkey for them.

Mr. Carton said it yesterday and I'll say it again, what the frick do we owe the Kurds? Whether or not the Kurds are free or oppressed has absolute no bearing on my life or the life of the average American. Lastly, how do you expect our government to be limited at home when we are the world's police. We cannot afford it and our meddling in the affairs of other countries does nothing but engender more hatred towards us.

What I was saying was I think GenLee's thread title is spot on regarding the politics in DC. Neoconism is a hard DC habit. So it is not a good 'political move' for Trump with those that neocon all the way to the Pentagon in DC. The MSM are all of course saying "THIS CAME FROM THE TOP" as if Trump was never advised by his military JCS. Therefore giving POTUS another negative headline politically for the non political junkies to think pulling out is bad.

If GenLee really thinks this is a bad move beyond the BS politics then you are here to educate him and not call him a tard, no?

Nothing

But I'd probably do something that bolsters the Kurds in the hopes it's a pain in the arse to ever increasing Iranian-Turkish relations. And helps them attack (threaten) any Qatar pipeland that goes eastward toward Russian and not toward Europe.

Going to bump this thread in 2 months when Turkish jihadists are beheading and raping Kurdish civilians.
