Either Russian leadership is fine with where they are because of their outlook (or Ukraine's) or they are being fed so much bad info from so many sources that they can't possibly make a rational decision. Or I guess Putin sees this as his legacy play and won't stop until he has the eastern oblasts at the very least. I've never really thought much of the "they can't stop" narrative that gets peddled in here.

Putain had to get Zelensky to call a ceasefire from drones to Moscow to hold the Victory Day Parade this year. Any unbiased view sees this as weak AF.

The logic, at least my view of it, is to save everyone else from what Russia (or one of the splinter states of it) from what it would become. Keep the current version of Russia as weak and dysfunctional as possible but don't let it get to the point of collapse either.
Who is going to gain power in a fractured Russia? It's not going to be someone who wins in the marketplace of ideas. When have good ideas ever won out in Russia? It's going to be whoever can project the most power or someone who can unify the radical Muslim population.
A lot of things sound cool until you start looking into the consequences.

Why not?
Short answer, Putin and his cohorts believe they can win and are willing to pay for that win with Russian blood and treasure.
And unlike out season there is no mechanism for their people to pressure them to stop no matter how tough it is in them.

We will present our Anti-Ballistic Program to our partners and, for the first time, hold a meeting at the level of leaders, national security advisors, and defense companies from countries that can make a concrete contribution to building a new anti-ballistic system. Robotic warfare is evolving fast. Next it will increasingly use AI to allow it to operate immune to electronic counter measures.
