Because if you ask people in Belarus how they like being a vassal state. In general they don't like it. Their leaders just never gave them a choice.
If you think Ukraine will end up a vassal state anyway, and I guess Nate does, then yes they would have 100% been better off.
I would have said the same thing at one time, it's more up in the air now.

Probably the biggest running argument in this thread that goes back to the very beginning is something along the lines of this:
"Ukraine should cut whatever deal they can, as soon as they can. The terms will only get worse. If they keep fighting they won't have any leverage at all. They're all just dying for nothing."
But that turned out to be misinformed.
Ukraine has definitely improved its position at the negotiating table.
The main points that Russia put forth in the first three years of the war (Russia picks Ukraine leaders, Russia and China jointly guarantee Ukraine security, 100,000 man standing army, no western military equipment, no western alliances, no economic or investment deals unless approved by Russia, etc)
Those are all off the table now.
At this point Putin would settle for just getting the Donbas.
But even Trump refused to push that to Ukraine. Because its obvious to even Trump that Russia can't take it.
So what does Russia get from this?
Whatever it ends up being, it's a whole lot less than what they thought they were gonna get.

While most of my work in Ukraine took place in Kiev & Odessa, I did spend two weeks in 2010 working in Lviv in western Ukraine not far from the Polish border.
The first morning working there I thought I would win my coworkers favor by making my introductory remarks in Russian...not having to go through the interpreter assigned to me.
The temperature in the office immediately dropped about 50 degrees and the smiling looks I first received turned into glares.
I turned to my interpreter and asked her, in English, "What just happened"?
She said, "The Ukrainians here in Lviv don't like to hear Russian spoken. They only speak Ukrainian here."
I apologized to the group, in English, which my interpreter translated, and I told them I would never speak Russian with them again.
The temps rose and smiles returned.
I later learned that part of western Ukraine was the last area retaken by the Russians from the German occupation in WWII and Lviv was the center of the Ukrainian resistance to the occupying Russian army. The resistance fighting lasted until the early 1950s when the last Ukrainian partisans were finally captured and executed by the Russians.

I’m happy our ancestors fought the British in 1812 instead of letting them bully us around even though we were just 35 years old and an ex colony of our mother country. But again they believed in freedom.
