It sounds like President Trump is making one final attempt to get Putin to the negotiating table before ratcheting up the pressure.

US President Donald Trump is considering sending Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, saying it would provide "a new step of aggression" in its war with Russia.
When asked on Air Force One if he would send Tomahawks to Ukraine, Trump replied "we'll see... I may".
It follows a second phone call at the weekend between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who pushed for stronger military capabilities to launch counter-attacks against Russia.
Moscow has previously warned Washington against providing long-range missiles to Kyiv, saying it would cause a major escalation in the conflict and strain US-Russian relations.
Tomahawk missiles have a range of 2,500 km (1,500 miles), which would put Moscow within reach for Ukraine.
Trump spoke to reporters as he flew to Israel. He said he would possibly speak to Russia about the Tomahawks requested by Ukraine.
"I might tell them [Russia] that if the war is not settled, that we may very well, we may not, but we may do it."
"Do they [Russia] want Tomahawks going in their direction? I don't think so," the president said.

Trump trying to do anything to Putin has looked closer Elmer Fudd chasing Buggs Bunny than it has anything competent to this point

My opinion is that Trump has been temporarily OK with that for two reasons:
1) it ended up being easier to finish the israeli-Palestinian conflict first.
2) Trump knows that he still holds the cards.
I think the current situation is very similar to the situation that developed with Iran. Once Israel destroyed all of Iran's air defense and completely controlled the skies, the risks of a US bombing attack dropped to nearly zero. Israel made it easy for Trump to make the decision to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities.
The situation with Russia and Ukraine is very similar right now. Ukraine has created long lines for gasoline in many parts of Russia with its drone attacks, and that problem is continuing to escalate. If Ukraine gets Tomahawk missiles to attack Russian oil refineries, it could absolutely cripple the Russian economy. Putin would really have no choice at that point.
President Trump likes to make decisive actions. Israel enabled him to make a decisive action against Iran. Ukraine is now trying to operate from the same playbook.

Zelensky, Trump hold second phone call in 2 days, discuss Ukraine's air defense, long-range capabilities
October 12, 2025 4:29 pm
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Oct. 12 that he had spoken with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump for the second time in two days.
Zelensky described the recent phone call as "very productive." According to him, the two leaders discussed air defense support and long-range strikes, as Russia ramps up its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
"President Trump is well-informed about everything that is happening," Zelensky said.
The previous call between Zelensky and Trump took place on Oct. 11. The two discussed Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy grid, agreements on bolstering Ukraine's air defenses and U.S. peace efforts in the Middle East.
Zelensky said that the second call focused on specific issues that had been planned during the previous call, and that the two leaders "went over all aspects of the situation."
The White House has not yet commented on the conversation.

Drones hit Feodosia oil terminal and two substations in Crimea - video
October 13, 2025, 04:25 AM
SBU and Special Operations Forces drones hit Feodosia oil terminal and two power substations in occupied Crimea, sources told NV on Oct. 13.
Ukrainian drones hit the following enemy targets:
• Feodosia Sea Oil Terminal — drones struck at least five storage tanks, triggering a large-scale fire at the facility
• The 220 kV Kaf? substation (near Feodosia), part of Russia’s energy bridge to Crimea — the strike damaged power transformers, an enclosed distribution unit, the dispatch room, and rooms housing protection/control automation, causing voltage swings
• The 330 kV Simferopol substation — a series of explosions was reported there.
“SBU continues systematically reducing the enemy’s military, logistical, and economic capacity to wage war against Ukraine," an informed SBU source said.
"Our technical capabilities allow us to 'shake' both the temporarily occupied territories and deep inside Russia. This work will continue.”

Russia brought in Iranian drones, N Korean regulars and supposedly Cuban troops, but it’s not kosher to give Ukraine Tomahawks?

Aaaand another Russian fighter jet crashes for no reason:
MiG 31 crashes while attempting to land, pilot survives
Russia does not have a functioning Air Force.
Russia does not have a functioning Navy.
Russia does not have a functioning Infantry.
Russia does not have a functioning logistical network.
Russia does not have a functioning Mechanized Manuever Force.
Russia does not have a functioning NCO corps.
Tell me how they are supposed to take Kiev again?

Disrupting the power bridge from russia could be a big deal if it continues. It supplies almost all of Crimea's electricity.
AI Overview...
As of 2025, Crimea likely imports close to 100% of its electricity via the energy bridge from Russia
. This was achieved by May 2016, and recent events indicate that the peninsula is dependent on that supply
SSU and SOF Drones Strike Power Bridge to Crimea, Cutting Power to Invaders’ Military Base Substations
Strike drones of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and Special Operations Forces (SOF) targeted Russian energy infrastructure in temporarily occupied Crimea during the night of October 12th–13th.
The Dnipro OSINT Telegram channel reported about the operation.
As part of this large-scale mission, Ukrainian defense forces successfully struck the 330 kV Simferopol substation, located at coordinates 44.92663635897202, 34.20914257849987.
Another precision strike hit the 220 kV Kafa substation at coordinates 45.07648471176358, 35.31592654989191 – a hit confirmed by NASA’s Firms satellite monitoring system.
These substations are critical elements of the so-called ‘power bridge’ to Crimea, which includes two double-circuit 220 kV cable-overhead transmission lines – Taman–Kafa and Taman–Kamysh-Burun – connecting Russia’s Krasnodar Krai to Crimea via the Kerch Strait.
On the Crimean side, the power lines connect to the Kafa and Kamysh-Burun substations, from which electricity is further distributed across the peninsula.
Meanwhile, an oil terminal that supplies fuel to Russian forces was also targeted again. The strike hit JSC Marine Oil Terminal – a strategic facility for transshipping petroleum products in Crimea. Its storage capacity amounts to 250,000 cubic meters.
The campaign of strikes on key energy infrastructure in Crimea is primarily aimed at neutralizing Russian forces on the peninsula, which is used to deploy aviation and naval assets that carry out attacks on Ukrainian territory.
In addition to active strikes on these facilities, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are also targeting military equipment – primarily aircraft and radars.

Man, this thing looks awesome!. It's a sign of what we have learned from the war, though, that manned helicopters will soon be obsolete for many missions.

Trump is going to welcome Zelensky to the White House on Friday.
Kinda makes me think that there will be a significant announcement.

The timeline of settling differences globally makes me think that Trump was getting all the smaller stuff out of the way first.
Now with the Goat War between Pakistan and Afghanistan will Trump put Ukraine on the backburner to settle that one first.

Trump has a real opportunity to put pressure on Putin. There is international momentum in Trump’s favor. I suspect he is ready to project American power to put an end to Russia’s aggression. The ceasefire deal in Israel likely has Trump wanting more international success.

Yes, stacking international wins not only builds momentum for more foreign policy success, it also boosts the President's popularity at a time when it gives him greater leverage against the Democrats in the shutdown fight. The GOP message then becomes something like:
"Look at all the great things that the Trump administration is accomplishing to make the world a safer place, while the do-nothing Democrats won't even vote to pay our troops."

we're getting off-topic, but if Trump "wins" the shutdown a big chunk of Americans see their healthcare premiums shoot up a lot... so, pyrrhic victory.
Foreign Policy is not top of the list for the majority of American voters, unless the economy is so solid and good they have no other worries (and when the economy is solid and good, fewer Americans bother to turn out to vote, strangely)...

We actually didn't really know any of this until the Russians goat fricked themselves on the road to Kiev.
The most significant development of this war has been the complete destruction of Russian mechanized divisions. They simply don't exist any longer. Something like 30,000 armored vehicles turned to scrap metal.
Followed closely by them burning through 25 million artillery rounds and all of their reserve of hardened steel artillery barrels.
Up until now, NATO had to take those things into account. Now, they have to worry about some sort of hybrid drone, cyber, infiltration, sabotage type of war attack from Russia.
But the idea of them pouring across the border with tanks, BMPs, and APCs supported by fighter jets, helicopters, and artillery...... that will never happen again.
